5 star recruits and Game-changers

Dec 16, 2013, 12:42 PM

I'm curious: what does Clemson need to start doing more of/better to start reeling in consistent 5 stars? I mean, teams like OSU and FSU who last time I checked haven't been winning national titles lately seem to be able to do it effortlessly. Don't get me wrong, I'm well aware that we here at TigerNation are just as good as anybody in the country at brining in multiple 4 star recruits year in and year out. I get that. We don't have a problem with that. But sooner or later there really is only so much you can do when you go up against a team who is just pound for pound bigger, stronger, faster, and more talented than you. I feel like the biggest thing that continues to keep us from ascending into the upper-echelon of college football teams in the nation is the fact that we just can't seem to win the 5star battles, the kind of kids who are "game-changers" the second they step on campus and dominate. Someone with far more intelligence in the areas of player-development and recruiting techniques: please help a brother out on this one.

It's Ohio States first 5 star this year.....

Dec 16, 2013, 12:48 PM

We have one in our QB.... The most your gonna get in one season is 3 or 4 and then you will have the best class in America.... Remember most of these ratings are done by people who don't know football most are just fans of the schools they cover.... Rivals is run by fans most of those guys bought the website years ago because they are a fan......

So..

Dec 16, 2013, 12:51 PM

You're saying it has more to do with player development once the kids get to college then? So basically some programs are just better at doing it than others then? Sounds to me like ultimately it's a question of superior coaching ability then.

to answer your question, imo we have to spend more on recruiting, evaluate better, develop players better once we get them on campus. from a coaching stand point 60-70 percent of a program is recruiting. you cant win the Kentucky derby with a jack-ass. ALL of the coaches on a staff have to be good or great on a staff to land the the players you speak about, not just one or two. dabo was and is considered one of the best there is at recruiting but he has many duties as hc to be as effective as he once was. we have some coaches who are not good at recruiting and don't pull their weight. places like Alabama have many people involved outside of coaches that help with high school coach relations, plus they win, and most all their coaches are also good recruiters or get replaced. just a few thoughts.

"ALL" would be nice but for the most part you're just plain

I would look at our recruiting methods.

Dec 16, 2013, 12:55 PM

I have been told that we tell players that if they commit to Clemson, they cannot visit any other schools.

You make that sound like a Clemson exclusive...***

Malzahn had his first recruiting class ever at AU...

Dec 16, 2013, 1:16 PM

That's a silly example considering he basically inherited lsat season's class. As to Satan, if he doesn't like his 'choice' he'll just cut them....

Extra-cirricular activities

Dec 16, 2013, 1:05 PM

IMHO.... and from what I've read a few times.... Clemson being in such a rural area doesn't offer the kind of 'activities' and press access that some of these recruits like being around. Basketball suffers from the same dilemma. You may want to consider if those are the recruits that we want and need.

Until we start getting the elite kids again, please quit calling Dabo a great recruiter. The past three years have proved otherwise.

Re: 5 star recruits and Game-changers

Dec 16, 2013, 1:24 PM

IMO the first thing we need to do is develop a list of what are assets are at this point in time. eg. great stadium in which to play, rabid fan support that travels great, excellent practice facilities for all weather conditions, etc. etc. The develop a list that are things that could be viewed as negatives: rural school, ACC not the strongest of leagues, possibly less press than at some other schools, etc.etc.
Next we develop a standard "pitch" to recruits that emphasizes the positives and tailors them to the recruit's special situations. Do the same thing for the negatives by having answers as to why our school, our program, our fans, our coaches, our current team, etc NEED AND WANT RECRYUUIT X to JOIN US!
It's called high level salesmanship that emphasizes the prospect (recruit), the benefits to coming to Clemson in general AND WHY THIS RECREUIT SHOULD COME AT THIS TIME.
To expand further, this can be developed into a canned presentation on-line or internet based presentation accessible from any where (with security codes, etc.).
to get more level 5's we've got to be presented to more level 5's. It's really that simple.

Basketball especially suffers

Dec 16, 2013, 1:25 PM

From being in a rural environment. The vast majority of top rated players come from the inner city. Occasionally you'll get one of those kids who has to escape. But not very often

We do Chicken right...it's not just for frying anymore!

In any given year there are only 10-15 or so 5-star players.

Dec 16, 2013, 1:28 PM

ESPN lists 13 5-star players in all of America for 2014. Realistically, how many of those should we be getting?

Heck, all I want for Christmas is an above average offensive line, and you don't need 5 star players for that.

Re: 5 star recruits and Game-changers

There is this thing in society called money. There is money, and there is BIG Money. BIG and BIGGER money can buy a roster full of 5 star players. And I also believe that HS coaches are increasing their HS coaching salaries by swaying some kids to certain schools from excepting Big Money. And that has been going on for a Very long time with the kids of very poor parents. It will never slow down until more schools receive the absolute DEATH sentence when caught. And all the coaches involved get ban from ever coaching again at any educational level school.
