#### it, I see the value in picking up in-state 3 stars, but can they focus more on highly rated prospects? It sounds shallow, but it’s obvious that our recruiting has declined since 2018. And I wish Clemson would start getting commits like they used to, and while a lot of these young men are great for the program, there’s got to be some more success landing more top recruits.

I enjoy this site but The one thing that is really starting to annoy me is the handful of idiots that call fellow Clemson fans “chickens and coots” If they share an opinion they do not agree with. That smells like immature little brats to me. Their original poster has a valid point whether you believe it or not. It is certainly a valid discussion. Grow up!

This is a point that comes from what I initially meant. Those who would like to deny our decline in overall talent also like to believe Clemson will be just fine. They may be now with Riley and his help recruiting, but if Dabo hadn’t moved on, our recruiting would lead us to true mediocre ACC level over time.

That was a thing called a "rhetorical question." Further down the page I already provided them. The point was that our per recruit ranking has without question fallen off the past 3 years. The reason the overall recruiting rank hasn't fallen as much is because we're losing more players to the portal and so we recruit more players, which helps teams' recruiting rankings.

I’m not sure why you changed the decline from taking place over the previous 5 years, per the OP, to 3 years? I’m also not sure why we can’t use an industry standard composite recruiting ranking, but fine by me, here you go… Based on average recruit rating, I’m not sure we have fallen off in the past three years considering 2 of our top 5 ever classes, based on average recruit rating, have been recorded in the past three years.
2021: 94.01
2018: 93.45
2020: 93.44
2017: 92.10
2023: 91.14 (incomplete at time of rating)
2016: 90.30
2022: 89.83
2019: 89.76
2015: 89.12
2014: 88.69

Usually better than most of the teams ahead of us because we usually don't have as many recruits. The number of recruits also figures in on the recruiting rankings. That's why I don't worry about it.

First, the question. What's your source? Is it the 247 Composite, or some other source?
Now, the comment. You list the 2024 Class, which is fine--except it's very early in recruiting. We've only signed around 5 or 6 thus far. Next time (if you're submitting it early in the recruiting year), you might want to add a note pointing that out.

Number of stars don't matter as much as whether our skill guys have the speed to compete. You can't coach speed and that is what we have been missing. I am not sure what recruiting site you are looking at but we were 8th in 2018 and 9th this year on Rivals. Not much difference there.

In 2018, we had 17 recruits. This year, we had 26. That's a huge difference in ranking. The most important thing is the rating per recruit. We used to lose no one to the portal or to decommitments, and so our classes were small but very high quality. In 2018, our average recruit was a 4.06 star. This year, it was a 3.65. That's the difference between top 3 in the nation and outside the top 15.

But the difference is it seems like Clemson is ‘going after’ less and less top recruits every year. Maybe we aren’t, what do I know? But what’s apparent is the combination of player development issues by coaches and the proportion of top recruits in each class.

Actually, that's not entirely true.
Since 2018, we've signed (11) 5 star players, and (65) 4 star players. In the 5 years before that (14-18), we signed (11) 5 star players and (45) 4 star players. Said differently, we've sign the same number of 5 stars, and 20 more 4 stars when comparing the two time frames.
Also, the percentage of the sum of 4 stars & 5 stars, vs the entire class signed, has stayed the same at 65% ('14-'18) to 65% ('19-'23). See below.
I would say there is a small drop over the last 4 years in number of 5 stars. But generally we've always had about the same amount on the team over any given time.

2023 - (1) 5*, (18) 4* = 19/26 (73%)

… how those highly ranked players have performed.
We’ve certainly brought in some highly regarded skill players since 2018.
But for whatever reason a lot of them have failed to perform.
One 5-star QB and several of 4/5-star WRs as well as a 5-star RB all failed to make a national title worthy competitive impact.
This is not to say that we shouldn’t continue to go after the big fish, but we’ve seen that it’s not a fool proof plan.

Why would they not when they know they can get him. Jalen Hyatt did not even really consider Clemson and went to TN, he played in Irmo,SC.

Forgive me but it seems this seems to contradict your original post of pursuing in state 3 stars. Clemson grabbed Williams late. Forget the stars, either trust in talent evaluation or not. As others have said, stars in a lot of these young guys eyes come $ signs. Whereas a Hyatt is looking at the big picture and big money….the NFL.
