247Sports analyst Smoke Dixon tabbed Clemson as a "loser" of the 2024 recruiting cycle after finishing just outside of the service's Top 10 classes (11):
“Typically, Clemson wins in recruiting. They win with top players. They landed two top players this cycle. That list usually has 5-10. When you look at the middle of the pack guys, they have developmental players. I'm not saying that they don't have players that can help them win. But this is Clemson. They beat Alabama twice in the national championship game. They're taking a step backward. They should be in the top 5; now they're out of the top 10.”
Georgia, Ohio State, LSU, Oregon and Texas A&M were listed as winners of the cycle.

This guy clearly hasn’t done his research and hasn’t looked at all of Dabo’s classes. 11-12 is about the average. We have only signed like 2 or 3 top 5 classes depending on the service.

and those turned out the worst results (20 class #3, 21 class #5). For that matter, the 18 class was #7 and the last time we won the championship when those kids were freshmen.

Devil’s advocate - two of those classes had Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence. You can have the 10th ranked class and compete with Alabama with #4 and #16.

I think this is a misleading take. During our period of dominance we never had decommitments and we had virtually no transfers out. So we were bringing in classes ranked around #7 or so (#4 (2015); #6 (2016); #20 (2017); #7 (2018); #9 (2019); #2 (2020) and #6 (2021)), but we were keeping those players in-house and developing them. Because of NIL and the transfer portal, we now lose a lot of players each year and are not bringing in anyone.
But I'd also like to point out that our recruiting over that time was better than the rankings will suggest. Remember, because we lost no-one, we signed the smallest classes every year by far of the elite programs. That hurt our recruiting ranking. Look at our average per-recruit ranking. From 2015 to 2020, our average ranking per recruit ranked: #6 (2015); #5 (2016); #3 (2017); #3 (2018); #8 (2019); #2 (2020), and #3 (2021). That's an average ranking of #4.5. So we had a top 5 class almost every season per recruit. That's why the guy pointed out we always had 5-10 superstars every class.
In the past 3 seasons, our per-recruit ranking has been: #14 (2022); #11 (2023); and #10 (2024). That's still quite good, but it does mean our average recruit, instead of being a 4 star, is now a 3.5 star.

We also had very few injuries. Ave.star rating per player is a far better measure of projected roster talent than a subjective ranking that weighs quantity far too heavily.

But I do understand the point the author is making. When you consider the fact that we were an elite program not too long ago, winning two national championships with generational talent, it’s clear that our recruiting has dropped off some despite what the rankings might suggest. That, or the talent we have gotten recently has not developed as we would expect.
Funny you brought up basketball. Let me know when Clemson has been a basketball school for generations, with conference and national championships in its history, the finest facilities in the nation, and one of the highest coaching staff budgets in the country, and THEN we can talk about recruiting classes.
Until then, you should worry about football breaking out of this concerning trend.

You're the only one worried. You know the fb program is still elite. Worries you silly. If you dont know it, I do, so no worries here.
The fb program went on this run when it was at about the same point the bb program is now. So, yes, we are going to talk about bb recruiting any time we want.
You do not seem to differentiate between personal and observational comments. Most people really like our bb coach. I do. I want our program to win because I want it to win with him. His many good qualities have granted him a longer tenure and greater affirmation than the record would predict at other places. That is a fact. However, last year was a bit of a final straw with many, me included. Too many head scratcher losses, which is a trend rather than a one-off, leading to missing a 64 (sixty four) team field. While we all love last week's win, this "best in program history" win got us all the way up to ... #26. It is fair to conclude that this is the ceiling, and that it is too low.
But you can't handle that, becoming an a$$hat in response.

I don't care about basketball at all, but define elite? I would not define our football team as elite at the moment. They're good, but not elite. The last 3 years we've finished the season ranked #14, #13, and #20. Our recruiting has been good, but not top 10. I personally would not call a top 15-20 program elite, especially when there are only about 70 P5 schools. But to each their own.

I don't know why he thinks a team coming off of a 9-4 season "should" be in the top 5 recruiting, or why he implies that that is where Clemson lives, or that that is what we used to win our championships.
By that site's own rankings, here is where Clemson has landed by recruiting class:

2016 11
2017 16
2018 7
2019 10
2020 3
2021 5
2022 10
2023 11
2024 11
Championships in 2016 and 2018 were built off of recruiting classes that never were higher than 9.
If he had assessed that we didn't recruit to needs or something, okay. But to imply that we are "supposed to be" in the top 5 makes no sense.
The class is great. Next years looks even better. Good stuff ahead.

Read this JK, when the re-ranks are done I think after 5 years, Clemson
classes are continually ranked higher. Why? because we recruit needs
and we develop players. Clemson recruiting is still top notch. The 2025
class is looking spectacular. Last years class has two freshman all americans.

I know I'll get totally blasted for this but the guy isn't totally wrong. Yes we have some really good talent in this class. Brown, Wescoe, and Moore can go play anywhere they want! However, the rest of the class, while very good and has developmental potential, I don't feel is "elite". I think it all depends on how you look at this article. It is kind of a compliment because he's saying Clemson is not a typical average place, and should therefore, have ELITE talent. Oh, and couldn't disagree more with whoever said we won National titles with same or less talent. The QB, RB, and WR talent on both those teams was elite. Just go look at where most of those guys are now and the production they are still putting up. Anyway, flame away, I expect it anytime you do anything but pump sunshine.

When have we ever just brought in all the elite talent we wanted?? The answer is we’ve never recruited like that. We had elite talent at the most important position: quarterback. We also had elite players at other key positions such as wide receiver, running back, defensive line, and in the secondary.
Even though our classes overall were not tops in the nation, our talent at those key positions was.
I do think we did a much better job then of developing players compared to now, but this ridiculous myth that we won big with inferior players has to stop.

At what point did we decide those guys were elite though?
Trevor the whole world knew, but when did we know Deshaun was going to be elite. We knew he’d be good, but no one knew how good.
Mike Williams was our best WR that first NC. Anyone saying they knew what he was going to become from high school is a liar.
Wayne Gallman was our RB. We thought he was a package offer to get nkemdiche.
Outside of Trevor and a couple DL like Dexter and Wilkins, we didn’t know we were recruiting anyone elite. It’s easy to point at where they ended their careers and what we thought of them then, but you must not remember what they were when we first got them.

The idiot that wrote this doesn't even understand how his own network recruiting rankings work.
Their team rankings has Ohio State at #5 with a total of 291.54 points. Clemson is 11th with a total of 272.19 points. They could literally swap 1 recruit and be ranked about the same.

The difficulty in truly quantifying the likelihood of player potential is huge and the recruiting sites all engage in the illusion of certainty. Which this article is relying on to make its conclusions.

How many really hit? How many were late bloomers like Capehart? How many of them, especially 4 stars, were absolute busts (looking at you Ajou). The number of that class transferring out is bonkers.
Per 247 it was the number 3 class. In reality of how it shook out what would it have been? In the top 30?
247 doesn’t really know and they want you to think they do.

Clemson has rarely been the highest ranked recruiting class as compared to OSu, Bama, UGA, etc. Those are the schools that pull in 5 of the top 25 players routinely and we always tend to have 1 maybe 2 of those top 25 players. Yet in recent history we have been comparable or better than those teams on the field. These clueless national prognosticators always dog clemson before we play in CFP games. I remember being told we had no chance vs Oklahoma with baker mayfield, we were supposed to be outclassed by OSU and Bama every time we played them.. i mean they have way better talent than Clemson...right?
We tend to have the right talent at the right positions on most occasions when we're in the mix. This guy is loooking at how many 5 stars we have and comparing it to how many OSU/Bama/UGA has.. but its always been like that.... at least as long as the CFP has been a thing.
