247sports new nickname for DeShaun Watson

Clemson247 Insider Cory Fravel has a new nickname for Deshaun: Touchdown Jesus.
In answering a question about Clemson's offense in 2015:
"I also suspect you will see less running around of DeShaun Watson like fans are used to. Why? Because Touchdown Jesus can dissect defenses. For example, the very first touchdown he threw against Georgia to Charone Peake right in the helmet hole of the Dawgs linebacker."
Cracked me up, now THAT is a good nickname.
Go Tigers!

Jesus' name should not be used like that. God said not to take His name in vain, meaning being used in a way that does not honor and glorify Him. He even made this one of the 10 commandments, saying those that break this commandment will not be found guiltless.

At the VERY least it is disrespectful to our Lord Jesus Christ, and it's offensive to us Christians who trust in Him. It's a mistake, and I suspect that DW would not like it.
As for the unbelievers here making snide comments, you are entitled to your opinions. You are free to reject Him. That said, as unbelievers your opinion lacks wisdom from God. I pity you. And if having fun at parties is more important to you than who Jesus is, I REALLY pity you.

Into the meaning of "taking God's name in vain." To put it another way: you keep using that word (vain); I do not think it means what you think that it means.

I for one would be delighted to hear the results of your Hebrew word study into that phrase and findings about typical Hebrew customs when it came to referencing and showing respect to the name of God.

Actually, I am a believer in Christ. But your post is illustrative of the very reason I'm reluctant to use the term "Christian" for myself.
It is precisely the condescending, judgmental religious snobbery that your post exudes that turns people away from Christ. Christ is about loving one another and tolerance, even for other religions and for those that don't believe. It amazes me that so called "christians" use Christ to beat up and punish other people. No my friend, I fear your missing His point. Are you sure your not the one to be pitied?

Felix, if you can't see...

how trivializing the precious name of your Savior, and turning His name into the nickname for a mortal human being is at the very least irreverent and disrespectful of Him, I can see no way to reason with you. Forget about despising me for a minute and just think about the issue.
You said you are a Christian. Ignore the scoffers here, read your bible and ask God for wisdom on matters like this. Does the name of Jesus deserve respect and reverence, or should it be trivialized? We know what the non-Christians think. What do you think?

This is an intrinsic fallacy, meaning, something that's as clever and wrong from scratch as phlosistron chemistry.
Either we have a humaninistic, forgiving God who embodies love, forgiveness, and is all-knowing and exists largely to better and protect his creations, or we have some respun version of the petulant, insecure, childish Gods of Olympus, who tosses fire, plague, and spite down on those who spurn his mighty divine self when he doesn't get your flattery and undying devotion.
Make up your mind, peoples. You can't have it both ways.
Lest you think I'm being flippant, I am not. But either God is self-assured enough to take a little ribbing and questioning, or he's an insecure tyrant, sort of a despotic sunglasses-wearing tyrant, but with lightning and thunder. "You DARE question ME? Use MY name in vain, will you?" ZZZOTT.
Just my .02 worth. No point tossing in more than that, I have noticed religious arguments, like political arguments, tend to have no resolution...and are usually fraught with a boatload of mean-spirited overkill. On both sides, usually.

Wasn't gonna come back to this but was curios when I read your reply.... It does mention in the bible that God is a jealous and vengeful God. Same one who wiped out the entire planet minus some dude and his family who decided not to save dragons but inexplicably saved a pair of every other animal on an arc. Then he promised he'd do it again. Spoiler alert for those that haven't read the bible.... the devil did it.

Then you should speak to your church or any religious groups you know that do live nativity. Also you should not watch some films as "The Passion". For the depiction of Christ should not be accepted. Oh...I'm one of your hated non believers. But if you listen to your Bibles teaching than you should know Exodus 20:4-5.

I respectfully disagree FlyingTiger. I understand your point, but I think what is lost on some Christians is the "humanity" of Christ. Remember, he was born fully human. Full of the same weaknesses and fears as other humans. In Luke we're told that He "increased in wisdom and stature and in favor of God and man". He was born human. He sweated, wept, went to the bathroom like every other human. It is precisely his humanity that drew people to him. They had no reason to fear him and every reason to like him. And from that they could learn the truth.
He didn't come to the pious but to the wretched and wicked, the tax collectors and prostitutes. Do you think he had no humor? Didn't he laugh, feel frustration, anger, love like other people? Of course he did.
Some Christians, in my view, use Christ's deity to beat down others particularly non-believers. How condescending and insulting it is to say "I pity you" to those who may not understand. It is an insult wrapped in piety and self-righteousness. Some use Christ as a means to deify themselves and to look down on others. It's the "see it my way or burn in hell" message that so many don't understand and walk away from.
So no, I don't think Christ is offended by associating his name in a humorous way to a "mere mortal". If one learns nothing from scripture it is that He came specifically FOR mere mortals.
Some tend to forget that.
Peace

Best, most level headed reply I've read in a while. I commend you for It. God knows of our humanity and he knows we like to have fun and laugh. If not it wouldn't feel so good. If you believe that we are made in his image than you would think dude had a sense of humor.

Felix 2, you say you "believe" in Jesus Christ. James wrote "even the demons believe in God." An intellectual belief and a spiritual belief are two different things. What does the Scripture say? That is what counts.

Being visible to the stadium is coincidence

I don't believe in it either but tolerance amongst all people should be strived for. Just because myself or anyone else doesn't believe in God gives us no right to try and belittle those who do. I support anyones religious beliefs or practices no matter if I think it's silly or wrong. It hurts no one to let people believe what they want. We should support each other... unless they like SCar. That should never be tolerated.
In all honesty if everyone stopped caring so much about who you pray to or who's right we'd all be better off.

Seeing as how Notre Dame has Touchdown Jesus, giving him that name is condescending and would draw extra pressure on him from other teams, I'd think no.
But why not ask Deshaun?
I'm guessing he'd say please don't use it.
