247Sports' Blue-Chip Ratio: 15 national title contenders

Jul 13, 2022, 4:48 PM

247Sports released its annual 'Blue-Chip Ratio' look at the teams most likely to contend for a national title. Clemson is in the middle of the contenders pack with a 63% rate of blue chips signed over the last four classes.

The rich got richer year-to-year with Alabama going from 84% in 2021 to 89% this year. Georgia dropped 3% to 77. One of the biggest moves in the top-tier was Texas A&M up 9% to a 70% ratio this year.

As is noted in the article, clearing 70% in the ratio is not essential to winning it all, as Clemson won with a 52% ratio in 2016 and 61% in 2018.

The article noted that transfers aren't deemed as "consequential" in the ultimate purpose of the metric and are not figured in, but Alabama would be up to 90% with transfers figured in this year and Clemson would be down one percent to 62%.

Talent gap will increase with the portal. Every program is willing to utilize it. So far, Clemson isn’t.

We've been leap frogged....

by several teams in one year when normally we'd have extended our lead by a few percentage points, b/c of the issue you mentioned.

Who are the teams that leapt us?

Perfect ratio for Clemson!

Under Dabo, having some 3-star prospects who play above their star level is a staple!

Developmental program!

Some of your other programs need "ready-made players day one" Dabo has shown patience and a willingness to develop 3-star players who "want it enough" to work hard to get better!

Hard to make a living having an "entire team" of guys you have to develop. But, mix in some good people who want to become better football players with some 4 and 5-star talent and you get - "competitive depth"! You get good practice and iron sharpening iron!

Clemson Maybe Only School w/3 5-Star QB's

Jul 13, 2022, 7:31 PM

Since some believe QB is the most important position; it's a good thing we have 3 5-star players. (DJU, HJ and Cade).

This is simply another data point showing, statistically, that 4* and 5* recruits give you a better chance of winning a championship. Doesn’t mean you “will” win one but, on the flip side, it does show that you probably won’t win one without them.

Now, being a finance and stats guy, they probably should do some type of regression analysis to isolate/determine how QB recruiting effects the end results, if that makes any sense. Or put another way, is it more important to have a 5* QB with lesser role players or, vice versa?
