224 AD was a LEAPING Year that began on a Thursday.

It was, as any Christian being persecuted by the Romans could tell you, known as the Year of the Consulship of Iulianus and Crispinus. Where did they get these names?

224 years ago, it was the year 1800. Electing a new President, which had only been done once before following George Washington, was a long and drawn out affair. Voting began in APRIL, and lasted through OCTOBER. And, the results were not announced until FEBRUARY 1801. Could you imagine the modern I-ME-NOW society waiting that long to find out anything about ANYTHING, much less a Presidential election result?

The election itself was a rematch, as John Adams, the sitting President, had narrowly defeated Thomas Jefferson in the 1796 election. Thomas Jefferson had then become the sitting VICE President under Adams. But in 1800, the results were reversed, and Jefferson won the most popular votes, and more importantly, the most Electoral College votes.

The Election of 1800 was a crucial change for the way US citizens elected a President. In previous elections, each member of the Electoral College cast two votes. There was no distinction made between a vote for President, and one for Vice President. The candidate with the most votes became President, and the candidate who finished second became Vice President.

But, starting with the 1800 Election, parties put forth "tickets", each with TWO designated candidates, along with a convoluted plan which was supposed to ensure that one of their candidates got one more vote than the other, winning the Presidency AND Vice Presidency. The Thomas Jefferson / Aaron Burr Democratic-Republican ticket won the day over the Federalist John Adams / Charles C. Pinckney alliance, with a 73-65 advantage in the Electoral College. The popular vote had them winning by 45,467 to 29,621. Remember, there were only 16 states at the time, and voting was a highly guarded privilege not afforded to nearly all people.

But, as Lee Corso's great great great great grandfather might have said, NOT SO FAST, MY FRIEND! Somebody didn't follow instructions, because, although Jefferson and Burr won the election, they both had the exact same number of votes for President! This tie, known as the Burr dilemma, necessitated a contingent election in the House of Representatives. Under the terms laid out in the Constitution, the outgoing House of Representatives chose between Jefferson and Burr.

Burr was accused of campaigning for the presidency himself in the contingent election despite being a member of Jefferson's party. Each state delegation cast one vote, and a victory in the contingent election required one candidate to win a majority of the state delegations. Neither Burr nor Jefferson was able to win on the first 35 ballots of the contingent election, as most Federalist representatives backed Burr and all Democratic-Republican representatives backed Jefferson.

Alexander Hamilton favored Jefferson over Burr, and he convinced several Federalists to switch their support to Jefferson, giving Jefferson a victory on the 36th ballot. Jefferson became the second consecutive incumbent vice president to be elected president. And now, you know the rest of the story that eventually led to the famous duel where Burr shot and killed Hamilton in 1804.

Hamilton and Burr had an acrimonious relationship that actually dated back to 1791, when Burr defeated Hamilton’s father-in-law, Gen. Philip John Schuyler, for a seat in the U.S. Senate. Hamilton's actions in denying Burr a chance at the Presidency in 1800 rankled, to say the least. Burr switched parties and sought the nomination as the Federalist candidate for governor of New York in early 1804. Again, Hamilton used his influence to block the ambitions of Burr, who subsequently ran as an independent and lost badly in April 1804.

That month a newspaper published a letter in which Dr. Charles D. Cooper claimed that at a dinner party Hamilton had called Burr “a dangerous man.” In Cooper’s words, Hamilton also expressed a “more despicable opinion” of Burr. In June the aggrieved Burr wrote a letter to Hamilton, calling for an explanation. Hamiltion felt he could not recant, or he would ruin his own political career.

Eventually, Burr demanded a duel to settle the issue of his "honor", even though duels were largely outlawed at the time. Accounts of the duel vary, but letters seem to indicate that Hamiltion intended to "throw away his shot" and miss on purpose. Burr did not miss, striking Hamilton a grevious blow in the abdomen with his shot, which fractured a rib, tore through his liver and diaphragm, and lodged in his spine. Hamilton died 31 hours later. Burr was disgraced, and instead of reviving his political career, he pretty much ended it that day in Weehawken, New Jersey.
