Jackie stayed on the nest all day and night yesterday. Shadow did not make an appearance. It rained all night and up until 1pm yesterday and then turned to light snow which turned to heavy snow last night around 10pm. These are Pacific times. Jackie does not like to give up nest duties when the weather is really bad. She is bigger than shadow and her body covers the nest better. She did relieve herself off to the side of the nest one time. They keep the nest area and the nest bowl clean.

As of now, she is covered in snow and the nest has some deep snow areas. It is supposed to snow all day and night Tuesday and Wed. Snow will end at noon Thursday. A winter storm watch is in effect for the area. Snow accumulation will be 8 inches or more. Big Bear Valley is over 5000ft elevation, and they get lots of snow in Jan-Feb.

Enjoy watching God at work in nature.

By the time the snow ends on Thursday, they will have close to 18 inches or more. It will be interesting to see how much snow covers the nest at midnight. Mammals in the wild have a very strong natural instinct to reproduce and take care of the young. I can only imagine that at one time man had that same instinct but over time has lost it.
