2020 ACCCG CLEMSON Vs ND

When Swofford allowed ND an independent to play football as a member of the ACC for only one season and play in the ACC championship game, he was not performing his fudiciary duty to financially benefit all of the ACC members. He opened the door for an independent school to win the ACC Championship and get one of the 4 spots in the CFP over a full conference member. The money ND would have been paid for playing in the CFP AND WINNING A NATTY would not have benefitted the entire ACC. IT WOULD HAVE BENEFITTED AN INDEPENDENT TEAM. YES, the ACC would have gotten some of the money, but ND WOULD HAVE SHARED IN THE payout to all teams, thus diminishing the amount teams would have received if ND had not been aĺlowed to be a regular ACC member.
So, ND added nothing to the value of the ACC conference in the one year they were allowed to join. They cost each conference school money. That is how Swofford and the ACC neglected their fiduciary duties to conference members.

I wonder how Swofford personally benefitted from this deal?
Luckily, Clemson did play in the CFP.

The TV ratings benefitted ESPN, NOT THE ACC. The ACC got no additional revenue from the TV ratings. Swofford was always looking out for ESPN over the teams.

You don't understand how the payouts work for the playoff. The way it works is, all of the Power five conferences receive a base payment of about $70 million dollars, even if they do not have a team participating in the playoffs. In addition to that, a conference receives $6 million dollars for each team that plays in the semifinal. There is no additional compensation for teams that play in the championship game. Notre Dame receives about $4 million from the college football playoff.

Back in 2020, Clemson and Notre Dame both made the playoffs, so each one of them got six million, which was shared by the conference. The conference also got the $70 million that they get regularly, plus they got the four million dollars that Notre Dame gets. So actually no, the conference didn't end up losing any money when Notre Dame played in the conference that one year, because two teams made the playoffs which brought in extra money, and also the ACC got to share the revenue that Notre Dame is guaranteed from the playoff, so there was no net loss.

They still had to share money with an additional team.

That doesn't matter. Your argument was that it cost the ACC money, but it did not. They actually came out with a minimal increase for that year.

Show me the money.

I know you are probably paid by the ACC to defend everything they do. That is your job. The only one's who benefitted were SWOFFORD, ND,and ESPN. Had Clemson lost to ND, they would have not made the CFP. I AM SURE SWOFFORD was pulling for ND. So, lucky for the ACC Clemson won. Clemson should never have been put in a situation in which it had to play a non conference member for the ACCCG and a spot in the CFP.

According to this article in fiscal year 2020-21, the ACC generated a conference record $578 million, which was an $80 million increase over the previous year. The article also stated that Norte Dame split its TV revenue from NBC wirh the conference.

Yes, that is what it shows. You are misreading the data. The column for 2021 in your article represents the fiscal year 2020-2021, which is the year Notre Dame joined the conference. If you look at the table for Ticket Sales in your article, the author notes this. It's also obvious when you see that in 2018, 2019, and 2020, ticket sales were $21 million for each year, but dropped to $2 million in 2021. It's obvious that this massive drop is the covid year. When we look at the conference revenue table, it shows the revenue was $37 million in 2021, up from $32 million in 2020.

They sold a conference membership without assessing a buyout clause, and that is saying there is two types of ACC memberships that other members wasn't given a choice of what membership they wanted!!!

Swofford owed ESPN due to his sweetheart deal he got for Raycom and his son. So, he was ALWAYS going to put ESPN interests over that of the ACC. And Jim Phillips has followed that tradition by letting the SEC lobby to get Bama IN the CFP over FSU which ESPN wanted.

I, for one can't wait until the ACC implodes, and I think that will be soon.

I said about everything you've said when it was happening, but the most important part that you and I haven't mentioned is that they were allow to join for the one season, but they didn't have to buy themselves back out of the ACC the way all other member schools have to.

I don't know why this hasn't been mentioned in the FSU or Clemson's suit against the ACC. Is Notre Dame so special that a buy clause wasn't attached to ND with them being intitled to the very same benefits as all other member schools, why in the H E L L not? That is what I would be asking, and somebody better come up with an answer or I'm gone without paying a buy out!!!

There cannot be two membership contracts for allowing special favors to schools who are in a Jam, and who believes they are special!!!!

That is a winning argument and FSU and Clemson should be making it in their law suit.

The deal Swofford gave ND was to benefit no one but ESPN and ND. I am convinced he did not want Clemson winning another natty and out ND in the conference to try and stop Clemson and help ESPN ratings which did not increase ANY tv revenue for the ACC.

So tell me who benefitted the most.
ND, ESPN OR Clemson. If Clemson had lost THE ACCCG they would not have been in the CFP. AND TO HELP ND out even more, Swofford stacked the deck to favor ND by having the best two teams play for the ACCC which had never been done. Call it what you wish, but the facts support Swofford was always looking for a way to screw Clemson.

It didn't benefit ESPN, as NBC still got the Notre Dame home games.

According to the NCAA rules at the time, you were required to play a round robin within your division. With unbalanced divisions, it would have caused scheduling problems.

Like I always say, the relationship between Notre Dame and the ACC is like the relationship between a cuckold and his wife. A relationship in which one partner has to be monogamous while the other partner gets to be with anyone they want. Notre Dame gets to receive the benefits of being in the conference while also not being subjected to any of its restrictions, which all the other members have to abide by. This is an absolute insult to the other 14 (soon to be 17) members of the league, none of whom are afforded the special privileges that Notre Dame gets. The Irish essentially get to be in the conference whenever it's convenient but also not be in the conference whenever they don't want to be. The covid situation just demonstrated that even further. I know the reason that this has happened is because the ACC has been desperately trying to woo Notre Dame into joining for their big football TV revenue. But this has been going on for years now, and it's obvious that ND has no intention of joining the conference, especially now. The ACC got completely finessed by the Fighting Irish. The league should've made the ultimatum and kicked them out long ago.
