Butler rejoins the Lions after playing in three preseason games in 2016 and being waived on August 29.

In 2015, the seven-year veteran appeared in nine games with the Lions and had three total tackles. He has 24 career tackles and two forced fumbles while playing for seven different NFL teams including Pittsburgh (2010), Arizona (2011), Washington (2011-2012), Buffalo (2012-2013), San Diego (2013), Tampa Bay (2014), and Detroit (2015-2016). He has appeared in two playoff games with the Chargers in 2013.

He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fifth round (#164 overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft. At Clemson, he finished his collegiate career with 166 tackles, two sacks, and eleven interceptions.
