Clemson moves up in D1Baseball Top 25 |
Clemson baseball captured a divisional crown over the weekend, moving the Tigers up a spot
in the latest D1Baseball Top 25.
Clemson is up to No. 3 going into this week's ACC Baseball Championship in Charlotte. Tennessee leads the rankings, followed by Kentucky, Clemson, Texas A&M and Arkansas in the Top 5. The next-best ACC team is the No. 1 seed in UNC, at No. 7, followed by Florida State (10), NC State (12), Virginia (16), Duke (17) and Wake Forest (22). South Carolina dropped out of the Top 25 after an 0-3 week. Baseball America kept Clemson at No. 10, rounding out a top-tier with Tennessee, Kentucky, UNC, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Oregon State, NC State, Georgia and Wake Forest. "Clemson swept Boston College to win the ACC Atlantic Division. The Tigers needed a late comeback in Thursday’s opener, as they scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead for good. The next two games were more straightforward and they finished the regular season with a shutout, their first since March 30. Clemson goes to the ACC Tournament in Charlotte as the No. 2 seed," said Baseball America. Clemson ranks No. 7 in the RPI with a No. 14 strength of schedule (per WarrenNolan.com). The Tigers play 11-seed Miami next at 11 a.m. on Thursday and then 7-seed Louisville at 3 p.m. on Friday (both on ACCN). Clemson can advance to a Saturday semifinal at 5 p.m. with its efforts one or both days (goes through with a 2-0 record or in a three-way tie as the highest seed in the pool). Individually, Blake Wright is in the ACC's Top 10 in RBIs (70; 3rd), runs (62; 6th), hits (76; 7th) and home runs (21; 7th). On the pitching side, freshman righty Aidan Knaak is third in ERA (2.96), strikeouts (97) and opposing batting average (.216). Austin Gordon is second in saves (9).
