Clemson Recruiting notes for 2010
•Clemson signed seven players from the state of Georgia today. That was the most for the program from Georgia since 2002 when Clemson also signed seven players from Georgia. The seven in that 2002 class included Nathan Bennett, who went on to become an All-American in 2006, and Chansi Stuckey who became a two-time first-team All-ACC receiver.
•Clemson had only seven players sign from the state of Georgia in the previous four classes combined.
•Clemson signed three players from the state of Alabama. Clemson has now signed 17 players from Alabama over the last seven years, or the seven years Dabo Swinney has been on the Clemson staff. Between 1990 and 2003, Clemson did not sign a single player from the state of Alabama.
•Clemson signed 23 players overall this year. The state breakdown: 8 from South Carolina, 7 from Georgia, 3 from Alabama, 2 from Delaware and one each from Florida, North Carolina and Tennessee.
•Clemson signed six defensive backs, four offensive linemen, 3 wide receivers, 2 defensive tackles, 2 defensive ends, 2 tight ends, 2 running backs and 2 linebackers.
•Clemson signed two players from the state of Delaware. It is the first time Clemson has signed a player from Delaware since future All-American Jim Bundren signed with Clemson in 1993.
•The 23 signees today are the most since the 2008 recruiting class had 25.
•As of 5:00 PM on Wednesday, Clemson’s recruiting class was ranked 17th by ESPN.com, 18th by Rivals.com and 23rd by Scout.com. Clemson’s class ranked second best among ACC teams behind Florida Stat according to Rivals.com. Clemson’s class was third best in the ACC behind Florida State and Miami by ESPN and Scout.com.
•This marked the fifth straight year Clemson had a top 20 recruiting class by ESPN.com. Clemson was 13th in 2006, 18th in 2007, 2nd in 2008, 19th in 2009 and 17th in 2010.
•Clemson signed six defensive backs. Clemson’s defensive back group was ranked fifth best in the nation by Scout.com and Rivals.com.
•Max Preps announced an “early top 10 recruiting classes for 2011” late Wednesday afternoon. Clemson was ranked second. The top 10 was: 1. LSU, 2. Clemson, 3. Florida State, 4. Stanford, 5. Alabama, 6.Ohio State, 7. Louisville, 8. Nebraska, 9. Oklahoma, 10. Florida.
•Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney said this class began on Feb. 23, 2008 when Martavis Bryant of Anderson, SC and T.L. Hanna High School was the first commitment. Bryant was the first in the class to sign and fax his letter of intent today (7:15 AM). Swinney said Bryant would fittingly wear number-one next season.
Signee Bios
Kalon Davis OL 6-6 325 Chester, SC (Chester HS)
Offensive lineman who enrolled at Clemson in January of 2010...rated as the #34 offensive guard in the nation and #27 player in South Carolina by Rivals.com...#46 offensive guard in the nation and #28 player in South Carolina by Scout.com...#30 offensive tackle in the nation by ESPN.com...#22 player in South Carolina by SuperPrep...first-team All-State by The State Newspaper and the High School Sports Report...ranked as 21st best player in South Carolina by Charlotte Observer...named All-Atlantic Region by Prep Stars...coached by Maurice Flowers at Chester Senior High School...recruited by Jeff Scott...chose Clemson over N.C. State, Penn State, Wake Forest, and Vanderbilt...born September 25, 1991.
Mickey Plyler on Davis: "I saw Davis when he was a junior and loved his tenacity. He played hard and was a terrific run blocker. I think he has a chance to develop into a good college linemen but conditioning will be a big key."
Reminds Plyler of: Cedric Johnson
Josh Watson DT 6-3 275 Chatham, VA (Hargrave Military Academy)
Mickey Plyler on Watson: "I think this is a high character kid who is very bright. I would expect Watson to work hard and become a steady defensive tackle down the road. He really improved his stock at the prep school."
Reminds Plyler of: Warren Forney
Martavis Bryant WR 6-5 200 Anderson, SC (T.L. Hanna)
Mickey Plyler on Bryant: "Bryant is quite as tall as Youngblood but he is similar in that he is a taller receiver with good speed. I like the way he catches the football. I saw him early in his career and as a senior. I think he really improved his hands as a senior. The Tigers needed early help at receiver and Bryant is the kind of player that may play early but will really improve when he gets stronger."
Reminds Plyler of: Kevin Youngblood
Corey Crawford DE 6-5 235 Columbus, GA (Carver HS)
Mickey Plyler on : "Crawford is a great looking physical specimen. When you draw up a defensive end prospect, this is what you look for. Crawford is a good pass rusher that is raw but he has a lot of tools. He fits right in line with some of the top defensive ends Clemson has signed in recent years."
Reminds Plyler of: Malliciah Goodman
David Beasley OL 6-4 290 Columbus, GA (Carver HS)
Mickey Plyler on David Beasley : "Beasley reminds me of a player like Eric Harmon because of his run blocking abilities. This guy finishes blocks. He plays with an attitude. Clemson was looking for an interior offensive lineman that could push for playing time next season and I think they may have found it in Beasley. You can see why Georgia made such a big push for his signature."
Reminds Plyler of: Eric Harmon
Reid Webster OL 6-5 270 Woodstock, GA (Etowah HS)
Rated as the #46 offensive tackle in the nation and 51st best player in Georgia by Rivals.com...#65 offensive tackle in the nation and #68 player in Georgia by Scout.com...#58 offensive tackle in the nation by ESPN.com...first-team all-state by the Atlanta Journal Constitution...two-time all-county...versatile lineman who has played four different positions on the line helped his team to 8-3 season and the state playoffs in 2009...team had a 9-1 record as a junior in 2008.....Cherokee County Lineman of the Year in 2009...#44 player in Georgia by SuperPrep...coached by Bill Stewart at Etowah High School...All-Southeast Region selection by Prep Stars...recruited by Billy Napier...chose Clemson over Florida State, Miami, and Mississippi....born Oct. 2, 1991.
Mickey Plyler on : "Webster is bigger than Roman Fry at this stage but he reminds me of Roman because of his style of play. Webster really gets after the defensive linemen. He comes off of the football well."
Reminds Plyler of: Roman Fry
Jake Nicolopulos LB 6-2 220 Anderson, SC (T.L. Hanna HS)
Mickey Plyler on Jake Nicolopulos: "Jake is a run stopping middle linebacker who is physical. He plays well between the tackles. This is a tough competitor."
Reminds Plyler of: Chad Carson
Sam Cooper TE 6-5 230 Nashville, TN (The Ensworth HS)
First-team All-Southern team selection by the Orlando Sentinel, one of two Tiger signees to make that team (DeAndre Hopkins the other)...rated as the #53 tight end in the nation by Scout.com...named All-Southeast Region by Prep Stars...#14 player in Tennessee by SuperPrep...coached by Ricky Bowers at The Ensworth High School...recruited by Dan Brooks...chose Clemson over Duke...born May 31, 1991.
Mickey Plyler on Sam Cooper: "Cooper reminds me of former Tiger Michael Plamer because Cooper is not a highly rated prospect but he has a chance to play early. I did not see him this season but the staff liked him enough in offer him in their summer camp. There is little depth at tight end so Cooper has a chance to play next season."
Reminds Plyler of: Michael Palmer
Vic Beasley TE 6-4 225 Adairsville, GA (Adairsville HS)
Mickey Plyler on Vic Beasley: "Beasley reminds me of former Tiger Ben Hall because of how athletic Beasley is entering school. He is not quite as thick as Hall but he is similar because he can stretch the field vertically. Beasley is a basketball body that could develop into a terrific pass catching tight end."
Reminds Plyler of: Ben Hall
Demont Buice RB 6-2 205 Gadsden, AL (Gaston HS)
Mickey Plyler on Demont Buice: "Buice reminds me of former Tiger Rudy Harris because of his style. Buice is not going to make many people miss. He is a power back that would rather run through tackles."
Reminds Plyler of: Rudy Harris
Martin Jenkins DB 5-9 170 Roswell, GA (Centennial HS)
Mickey Plyler on Martin Jenkins: "Jenkins reminds me of former Tiger Dexter Davis because Jenkins is not the biggest corner but he is a good cover guy and can develop into a top notch return guy."
Reminds Plyler of: Dexter Davis
Ricky Chaney DB 6-2 195 Beaufort, SC (Battery Creek HS)
Rated as the #72 outside linebacker in the nation and 21st best player in South Carolina by Rivals.com...#73 outside linebacker in the nation by Scout.com...#105 outside linebacker in the nation by ESPN.com...#19 player in South Carolina by SuperPrep...second team All-State by The State Newspaper...played in the North-South All-Star game in Myrtle Beach...ranked as #22 player in South Carolina by the Charlotte Observer...had 37 tackles as a junior in 2008...named All-Atlantic Region by Prep Stars...had 64 tackles in 2009 ...coached by Carlos Cave at Battery Creek High School...recruited by Dan Brooks...chose Clemson over Florida State and Miami...born Aug. 30, 1991.

Mickey Plyler on DeAndre Hopkins: "Nuke reminds me of another former Daniel High School receiver in Terry Smith because of the way he catches the football. They are related and the abilities are similar. Few high school receivers attack the football the way Hopkins does. He has tremendous ball skills. I can see him playing a lot as a true freshman."
Reminds Plyler of: Terry Smith
Tavaris Barnes DE 6-5 250 Jacksonville, FL (First Coast HS)
Mickey Plyler on Tavaris Barnes: "Barnes is an effort guy. He has a great first step. This is an example of a prospect that worked his way into a four-star rating. I did not see him earlier in his high school career but his coaches say he worked his way into a ton of offers. He is a guy who can play defensive end early but might grow into an athletic defensive tackle. It is rare to go into Jacksonville and steal a guy that is committed to FSU."
Reminds Plyler of: Adrian Dingle
Desmond Brown DB 6-0 192 Centre, AL (Cherokee County HS)
A 4-Star signee from Rivals.com...rated as the #24 safety in the nation and 12th best player in Alabama by Rivals.com...#66 safety in the nation and 14th best player in Alabama by Scout.com...#75 safety in the nation by ESPN.com...#10 player in Alabama by SuperPrep...#43 defensive back in nation by SuperPrep...named to All-Southeast Region team by Prep Stars...helped Cherokee County to state 4A Championship...had 536 yards rushing and 330 yards receiving to go with 11 touchdowns in 2009...ranked as 13th best player in Alabama by the Press-Register...honorable mention all-state...coached by Thomas Curry at Cherokee County High School...recruited by Charlie Harbison...chose Clemson over Arkansas, Mississippi State, and Tennessee....born May 12, 1992.
Mickey Plyler on Desmond Brown: "Brown reminds me of former Tiger Charpia on this one because Brown is a really tough kid. This is an athlete that excels against both the run and the pass. He is another high profile kid. If he had more height he would have been rated a little higher but this guy is a hitter that could play early. Brown really recruited hard for the Tigers after he committed."
Reminds Plyler of: Rusty Charpia
Darius Robinson DB 6-0 170 Atlanta, GA (Westlake HS)
Mickey Plyler on Darius Robinson: "Robinson really looks like former Tiger Tye Hill in so many ways. He is an outstanding cover guy. He is also a bright player. Robinson has the kind of ability that could get him an early look next season. You can never have enough players like this in your program. I think he was a key to this class."
Reminds Plyler of: Tye Hill
Joe Craig WR 6-0 170 Gaffney, SC (Gaffney HS)
Mickey Plyler on Joe Craig: "Craig is a speed guy. He reminds me of another former track/football guy in Thomas. Clemson loses a lot of speed with Jacoby Ford’s graduation and maybe Craig can be that speed, slot guy."
