Be able to take it to the house right??? I dont think some of you understand how hard it is to go to the house when the defense doesn’t even give a second thought to the pass. With Cades deadly accuracy and his own speed the defenses are about to have a headache on their hands. What Shipley has done these past two years with almost zero passing help is not an easy feat. The field is going to be so much more open for them next year.

insatiable lust for blocking. It's important to explosive plays, and 100% desire first.
It used to be, no block, no rock was the standing mantra in WR rooms; lots of injuries and transition now under the bridge... Fingers crossed, consistency in availability helps breed that competitive need at the position.

Blocked pretty good in the ACCCG, they seemed more confident when Cade came in. Past two years it seemed like they were going through the motions with no confidence their QB was going to get them the ball.

The "premise" is fine, things should open up w/ Cade, but...

the UNC game might be the absolute worst to reference in support of "explosive plays" & the running game = back to your OP.
It was the single worst output in Total Rushing Yards 2022 to date.
21 carries for 68 yards, 3.2 per carry. The GT game was 40 for 119, the only average below the 3.2.
It takes all 11 doing their jobs to consistently break long runs in the running game, the WRs are as important to that as anyone.
Looking forward to the Tigers building on the ACCG; it was fun watching the new blood.

Love this! I can't tell you how much I agree with the line: "wr's find a burning lust for blocking"! Amen!
I have been saying that a bunch over the last two years! People see Bama and Ohio State run a simple slant: "gone to the house"! But, not if the DL doesn't get their hands down. Not if the other WR doesn't run his **cough** "RUB Route" correctly! Depending on the play concept of course.
But, the skill position blocking helps everyone else! I trust it's being worked on, but it just seems to get any better!

Counterpoint:
Safeties playing 10 yards off the ball and CBs in constant press coverage means that more of our 12-15 yards runs should have gotten RBs behind the defense.
When Trevor and Deshaun were running the offense there was almost always a safety deep out of fear. That guy had a great shot to cut off the angle of the RBs on long runs. ETN hit home runs because he could beat the angle of those safeties.
This season we had way too runs in which our RB was behind everybody and the play did not result in a TD.
Different defensive formations won't stop the RBs from getting caught after they have already passed everyone.

Agreed. IMO, Shipley has very good speed for a running back, but I think it's important to remember that most running backs aren't fast enough to outrun defensive backs and will usually get run down from behind if they have enough field in front of them. I think we all got a bit spoiled by watching ETN run to the end zone pretty much every time he got into the open.

Agree we were spoiled by ETN, also not discounting how well Cade hides the handoff man is a magician with it. He puts the ball in the RBs chest instead of DJ holding the ball for the RB to grab. There are so many variables to a successful run game that some people miss, I’d bet a pretty good penny there will be several hand offs next year that Cade fools the defensive enough for our RB to slip through a wide open hole with a full head of steam headed to the house

But how many times we were told how wrong we about DJ, and how much better he was this season than last season. Cade should have been gotten ready for the season opener, and if he had been, just think of how good we would have been by mid-season!!!

Good points TigerO, I noticed that as well. Multiple times in 2022 Ship would clear the line and have only the safety to beat and would run directly at him or trip trying to make a move. Watch some old film of CJ and ETN. When they clear the Line, there was no juking and faking. They would plant a foot and fly toward the open area and outrun the angle. No fooling around......just go. CJ, especially, was amazing at it and usually the safety would not even touch him. Ship, on the other hand, sometimes trips over his own feet when trying to fake somebody out, rather than just flying to the open space. He is a great back with a wonderful future, no question. But I'd love to see CJ teach him how to "run to daylight" rather than looking for someone to run over.

That's why the offense looked like it did with Kelly Bryant, it was 1 dimensional. Now it's back to pick your poison. O-line still needs to their job of course, but the days of stacking 8-9 in the box with no worry should be over.

I thought the same, they both max out around the 40-50 yard mark before they get caught. Neither have the top end speed of Spiller or ETN, you knew once the D was behind them it was a done deal.

The only person I remember outrunning CJ was Jacoby Ford on a kickoff return.

Wasn't that when Ford was "blocking" for CJ on the return?

I think it's actually easier to break long runs

when safeties come into the box and the back gets past them. Shipley has done that several times this year only to get caught from behind.
The running game *should* be more efficient with a greater passing threat for the defense to worry about, but I don't know if that really makes the running game more explosive.

Like last year, Shipley takes a ton of hits. I’m pretty sure he was dealing with an ankle or hamstring injury the last couple games. I really hope we get to see him in open field healthy next season. He also needs to play with better vision to avoid those LB hits 10 yds downfield. He’s wearing out his body before he even has a shot at the NFL. His bull in the china shop running style will put him constantly on the IR at the next level.

I mean just the ability of Cade to effectively read the end in the zone read was already on display in the NC game. That’s a HUGE piece of Clemson’s run game that has been missing. Dj couldn’t read a defense or an end and it hurt.

Most long gainers have wr blocking dbs or lbs to get past the last level of defense.
