Pinion breaks down his decision to turn pro
Clemson junior punter Bradley Pinion signed with an agent Tuesday, effectively ending his Clemson career. The native of Concord, N.C. entered Clemson in 2012 and had one more year of eligibility. What does he say about the decision? Who will punt next season? Full Story » |

those have gone way down imo. I think the kickoff spot had to do with not working on it as much probably.

He wasn't terrible, but seemed to slow to be a return guy. We were spoiled by his predecessors.

It wasn't BC of his explosiveness trust me. It was Bc he had sure hands. Sammy coughed a couple up and so humphries took over.. One of his muffs against the coots two years ago was bc Bryant nailed him while trying to field it.

I'm concerned about our ability on kickoffs. We need someone who can kick it into the end zone every time. Teams typically put their fastest (and most dangerous) runners back to receive kickoffs. With all the talent out there, I just can't understand why we can't get a guy with that kind of leg.

Pinion had his off days, but he was very capable of kicking it into and through the end zone. There were games that he did it every kickoff.

Don't know the answer as a matter of fact, but I read some where I do think that he has another few semesters to graduate. But I can't be quoted on that!!!

I really think he could have benefited from another year of college experience. But, it's his decision. Why not do what Danny did and get a guy off the soccer team who can kick it out of the stadium?

times we are going to have to punt next year with Watson behind center. I'm guessing not too many times. Just throwing another perspective out there.

I wish Pinion the best but do not see him as a pro
Jan 6, 2015, 5:47 PM
|

I did not see him boom punts this year. I did not see him coffin corner or punt other teams inside the 10 this year with any regularity. As a comparison, I saw the ALA punter and Ray Guy Finalist, JK Scott hit more exceptional punts vs. Oh St than I saw Pinion hit all year.
Pinion missed some punts this year including in bowl game. Hard to understand his reasoning unless family is desperate for money ... and even in that case his performance on field with that big body sez he is not ready.

I was afraid to say it, but glad you did. I don't see him as an elite kicker. Too many times he kicked right to a top return back, and we paid the price. But, I wish him well. We ignore the kicking game at our peril.

I still don't get it

I don't know which punters kick rugby style low rollers, which the NFL probably wouldn't want, and can't find stats such as net punting or inside 20, but just going by punting average there were 14 with averages above 44, 7 seniors and 7 juniors. Of the 33 punters ahead of Pinion, there were 12 seniors and 12 juniors. Don't see how he has a better chance this year than next. He's not currently at an NFL level, and I doubt he makes a roster as a punter on potential. He needs another good year of improvement. He could make a practice squad and maybe an NFL team the next year. He's got good size. Does that matter for a punter? Maybe he can be a P/TE. I think there are other reasons he is leaving school which he is keeping private, and that's fine. Good luck to him.

slight correction to stats I posted
Jan 6, 2015, 7:23 PM

there were 18 punters with average above 44, not 14.
The very top guys, the 4 who averaged over 46, were 2 juniors and no seniors, so maybe Pinion was looking at that.

With the interest of the high ranking recruits toward Clemson I'm not surprised to see this. I wonder how many more will leave before signing day?

Is it his punting or the punt coverage? NFL will analyze.
Jan 12, 2015, 11:36 AM
[ in reply to I still don't get it ] |

A punter's averages & rank are GREATLY affected by the punt coverage (and the offense). From the NFL's perspective Pinion may be better or worse than his rank. If he gets a look from any NFL teams for punting, they will measure how quickly he gets the ball off, how far he punts, how good his hang-time is, how his placement is, and how consistent he is.

Do not understand this

it seems interesting to me that he mentioned in the interview that he can kick field goals and makes me wonder if this has anything to do with the field goal kicking responsibilities this season and moving forward. He wouldn't be the first to leave this season due to disagreements with the coaching staff on personnel.

Pinion Leaving

I have heard that numerous NFL punters are expected to retire after this season which would open up more than the typical number of spots.

I'd like to see a change in philosophy to where the punt return is viewed as an offensive play.

Once again education takes a back seat. I think this is a really bad mistake for a kicker of any type. The NFL has absolutely no alligence to them and will let them go in a heartbeat, after one screw up. Good luck on this decision. Just glad he is not my son giving up so early on his education.
