I would be pissed at Dan Campbell for not taking points on fourth down which ultimately costed his team the game.

They’ve been dormant due to a lack of success but the whole state is behind that team and it’s pretty cool to see. Tickets to Lion games are a hot commodity.

My best friend born in Dearborn, MI, and attended central Michigan U, who lived in MI his whole life is a diehard Wings, pistons, and Tigers fan but he absolutely loathes the lions, which I don’t understand. He says the lions suck so bad, they’re the worst organization ever, they should go 0-17 every season and fold, and they don’t deserve to win anything. Meanwhile he’s a Jags fan becaus he moved to Jacksonville for two years, and now he’s a Vols fan because he lives in Nashville. I don’t get it. 😂

It’s how Campbell is wired. A great coach doesn’t let emotion dictate decision making. That’s not Campbell. He’s a decent coach and likable but not a great coach. The Gibb’s fumble was the breaking point but two made FGs sure would have helped their cause to steal a win from the Niners.

They'd been the two seed by going to overtime against Dallas and winning, but instead they stubbornly went for two a second time (after the penalty which rightfully should not have been called). Not saying it would have changed the outcome of today's game, but it just further illustrates how much of a dice roller he is. Guess he's trying to be the new Riverboat Ron, but Ron can't stay employed. Not sure I'd want to emulate him.

How do you determine he is not a great coach? He has taken a team who has been bad for years/decades and taken them to the division CG. Something no other coach has been able to do in forever so how is he not a great coach? Perhaps this is a one-year anomaly but if he has success in the coming years certainly the view of him would change.

Because I’ve watched him for three years as the head coach. He’s manufactured losses more than a few times in Detroit. He’s a great motivator and players will go to war for him. That’s admirable for certain, but you need strong decision making during the circumstances of a game to get to a SuperBowl let alone win it. Too often he’s taking the riskier path in some kind of motivation exercise for his team. It definitely blew up on him yesterday.

He gave away a probable 6 points by going for it on 4th down twice.

Yeah, regular season and a lot of situations I like the aggressiveness and the message it sends to the team. HOWEVER, playoffs with the whole season on the line, I think he outsmarted himself. This wasn’t 4 and inches, it was 4 and 3, and a very makable 48 yd field goal.
He also mishandled the end of the game too needing two scores. With a 1:40ish, another makable field goal and keep all 3 timeouts. But all head coaches seem ****bent that they HAVE to score the TD first. I don’t get it. Kick the FG on first down, play defense for three plays, and then go for the TD with 1 minute left when you have sidelines and can spike the ball. Not certain to win, but once he takes that first timeout on the goal line, percentages are just wayyyy too low for onside kicks.

The third down run was a killer. That's an all-or-nothing play call, you HAVE to score a TD there. They didn't, and that essentially ended the game.
Campbell should have taken the 3 points when they were up by 14. A 3-score lead is significantly different than a 2-score lead and really changes the mindset and play-calling for the trailing team.

you in the helmet caused Detroit to lose.... watching Purdy run for 4545 yards caused Detroit to lose, fumbling the ball caused Detroit to lose.....
being a Detroit fan caused Detroit to lose.

Believe the guy did a #### of a job this year at a perennial cellar dwelling franchise! Gambling has been his MO all year. Players seem to love the guy and it shows in their efforts. Winning at SF was going to be a monumental task imo.

but in general they back the decisions. Do they agree? No.
But this is the aggressiveness Campbell has brought and without it they probably wouldn’t have been playing for the conference championship.
I’m a Dolphins fan so this is just my small sample Observation

It's one thing to be aggressive. I love that mentality and I think analytical based decisions are typically smarter than the "old school" of "that's just how we do it". However, in these two situations, Campbell absolutely should have taken the points. Especially the first one, 4th and 3, up 14....extending that to 3 scores would have been very tough for SF to overcome.

Lifetime Michigander and fan of the Lions. I’ve seen plenty of losing and in dozens of crazy ways (such as the Cowboys game this year). I agree with your comments. We lost big for so long that losing yesterday still left some satisfaction. However, if Campbell leads them to the playoffs the next several years losing like yesterday will no longer get him any allowances. He’s got to coach smarter.
