defense disrespected him by playing D that dared him to throw deep to his WRs. Then, 'Cuse started doing it as well (throwing deep down the sidelines).
What is it about Wes' D that makes the "read" a deep pass down the sidelines?

He trust his corners to cover the boundary because they’re good enough to do it. Which frees up the safeties to patrol the middle of the field and occasionally blitz

When you have 26 year old QBs they know what man coverage looks like, they’ll also send guys in motion to see if it’s man/zone. But once they snap the ball and the safeties don’t drift back they know it’s 1v1.

the safeties were in it, they still played down hill in aggressive run fits.
Clemson plays a lot of 1 High, but even then the safety gets nosey in the run game. BV and a lot of what Wes has done puts a lot of pressure on his safeties, especially in today's spread happy offenses. BV was always a stop the run first guy, put the O behind the chains, get into 3rd and longish, then get off the field.
What that leaves is 1 on 1 shots outside the numbers/hashes, because running two deep routes, opposite field along those puts the 1 High safety in a quandary - he can not cover both sides, unless a throw is made too far into the middle.
Here, this was what happened to Syracuse trying to play 1 High with their ROV/safety walking down in run support. My guess is Cuse was not going to let Clemson run 60 times for 293 yards as the Tigers did in 2022.

The FSU quarterback eats crayons and isn’t allowed to play with sharp objects. The only disrespect involved was from FSU and him thinking his receivers were good enough to beat our corners. The defense was better than FSU. They got lucky period. One play changed the entire game. They had three points on offense in the second half. If Mafah had read the blitz correctly and picked it up Clemson would have beaten those idiots by two scores. The FSU quarterback won 1 game against Clemson in 6 years. It took him 2 teams and millions of NIL dollars to have Clemson beat themselves. He’s a moron and too bad he won’t have a 7th year of eligibility next year so our db’s could disrespect him down in Tallahassee.

Certainly, no expert, but I pay some attention to football and why teams find success. I'll start with the team that I don't like, but I respect their results. Alabama plays with 2 high safeties until the other team shows they can run the ball successfully. This basically takes away the long throws because both corners have help over the top. They tend to do this well and usually keep everything in front of them and make the other team earn every yard. We seem to want to play with 2 high safeties but come out of this look very quickly. Putting one closer to the line of scrimmage or aligned more toward the center of the field. Thus, leaving our corners "on an island". Venables did this as well, so it's not specific to Wes. It's hard for 1 safety in the middle of the field to help out a corner on the boundary, especially if the QB moves the safety with his eyes away from where he really wants to go. FWIW, just my observations.

and coaxed him into throwing the deep ball just so he could prove he was good. He never did.
Then in OT Travis intentionally threw it to Coleman because Nate Wiggins was hurt 2 plays prior. He did get the final laugh but take away that one play over a blown coverage because a key DB was out - it still wasn't impressive. Literally the easiest shot ever.

I would not call that a blown coverage. Lukas was in good position, he just didnt squeeze colemon to the sideline as well as wiggins had been doing and that was an excellent throw, a tip of the cap play tbh.

With dink-and-dunk type offenses proving to be more effective, a lot of teams are shying away from chucking it long including some NFL teams.
It's still about taking what the defense gives you. If defenses play deep and try to take away the deep routes and throws, offenses take underneath stuff to move the ball down the field.

Most college defenses play zone because you need really good corners and safeties to play man to man.
Clemson plays quite a bit of man to man.
If you blow man to man coverage, it can easily be a touchdown.
