It is more socioeconomic. At 11.7 scholarships, nobody gets a full scholarship, so those in lower socioeconomic groups can't afford to come, even on a non-full scholarship. Schools like Vanderbilt are able to offset that with huge endowments. This was all caused by Title IX.

Then you reject reality. African-American children and adolescents experience poverty and attend schools in impoverished areas at over double the rate of white children/adolescents. It's not about low expectations, it's about recognizing societal disadvantages for African-Americans in this country dating back to before it was a country.

What you "see" isn't really relevant. It's an objective fact that nearly 40% of African-American youths grow up impoverished. Do you actually know what that means? It means higher rates of undernourishment impacting physical and mental development. Lesser access to adolescent medical care. Typically lower quality public education which correlates strongly with lesser academic performance.
Does that mean all do? No, but that's not really the point. The point is that it occurs at a dramatically higher rate and you can absolutely see it if you don't shove your head in the sand.

Everyone has the opportunity to better themselves some decide not to. One of my issues with a party that prefers handouts over hand ups. Sad thing some folks blacks and whites would rather live off of govt subsidies over bettering their situation. In my line of work I see it everyday. I get tired of the disadvantage BS in the year 2022. I have black friends that are very well off. If you want to talk about impoverished kids then we need to start with the family unit where most don’t even know who their dad is.
Some people need to get their head out of the sand and start digging into the root cause because it’s not always skin color. 50 years ago I would have said yes but not anymore.
Sad some folks are satisfied with a government check and even more so when the kids pay the biggest price for mom and dad’s decisions. I just hope they grow up wanting more than a government subsidy.
I will admit there are folks in bad positions that have tried to pull their selves up but I do not think that number would be a 50/50 split.

To allow more people to have a financially viable means to better themselves.
It's quite obvious some schools have more minority players than others. I'm totally against people doing nothing to help themselves then blame the system, but as far as baseball goes the opportunity for more kids to better themselves is imbalanced.
It is indeed a known fact that a higher percentage of black kids come from low income backgrounds. Blame their parents for that if you must, but baseball needs more scholarships and more opportunity.
There are 13 allowed scholarships in D1 basketball with 5 position players, and 11.5 allowed scholarships in D1 baseball with 9 position players. It literally makes no sense.

By African American do you mean like Elon Musk? I ask because if someone was born in the USA then they are simply an American. My ancestors are from Scotland and Ireland but I was born here so i am an American.

If he’s talking about college ball then ...
Maybe their socio-economic situation makes them more likely to jump at money offered by MLB out of high school?
Maybe they are less likely to have the academics to qualify for a scholarship or to succeed in college?
Just some things to consider.

exist for playing many sports in cities. We're talking about what kids do during the summer when they're small.
A parking lot might have a post for a basketball net - not much else. No big grassy area for a baseball diamond.
Plus basketball requires the LEAST amount of equipment. Most sports are expensive to play.

Scholarships do need to be fixed, but that’s not the problem.
It’s youth baseball. You can’t get anywhere in the sport without spending thousands.
Recruiters for college and pros very rarely attend a regular high school game any more. They all go to the showcase events and the major travel ball tourneys. It’s definitely more efficient as a scout, but also leaves a lot of unprivileged kids out of the conversation.

that for their kid to excel in a particular sport, he should play that sport year round, instead of playing several sports. Most kids will be better off long term, if they don't just play one sport year round. They are way less likely to get burned out...there are statistics that show this.

Blacks in cities play basketball, not baseball. In rural areas they play football. A lot has been said in regards to this by MLB. They're trying to drive interest in the cities, but it's an uphill climb.

Baseball has become the 4th most popular sport in the US behind football, basketball and soccer. The best athletes (black people bu evidence in the NBA and NFL) simply don’t want to play it at a young age. Part is it’s unpopularity the other is the use of their athleticism in the other sports. Baseball today has no movement, no stolen bases it’s simply throw it as hard as you can and homer or strike out. So their talents don’t get utilized in todays game either. MLB you can eventually make big money but you have to spend years in the minors and pay your dues. The NFL and NBA feature, and thrive, on their athleticism, and pay more right away. It’s a lot of things but it being unpopular is the biggest reason around the US but particularly in minority communities.

Uh, no. The reason college baseball is too white isn’t white peoples problems. There are much more scholarships available to minorities these days than whites. Believe me, I’ve discovered that recently.
In other words, since baseball is not a fully funded sport, parents need to instill the advantages of making decent grades if that is your sport of choice for college. Quite blaming other folks for your lack of giving a ####!

IMO youth baseball has become pretty expensive..,
Jun 14, 2022, 9:55 PM

Gloves and bats are pretty expensive. Local youth leagues have given way to “travel ball” with weekend tournaments in nearby cities and even paid coaches. More affluent kids make up the majority of these travel teams. Paid hitting and pitching coaches are available.
Neighborhood baseball is rare, replaced by a game that more exclusive. Compare to soccer or basketball where only one ball is needed and a local field or court.

This ^^^
Baseball has become an expensive sport. $100-$300 gloves, $200-$600 bats, $100-$200 cleats, uniform costs, the money to play in travel tournaments, not to mention gas and hotels for parents when traveling for ball games.
It’s become ridiculous.

OMG, ok, so what's the problem with baseball being too White. Basketball, and Football is mostly Black, so has it ever been publicized as being too black. And I say this without listening to, or reading another word written, or taped in that article.
And I didn't read another word bc the article started out with a racist comment that shouldn't be tolerated in any shape, form or fashion. Just as it shouldn't be tolerate if was said referring to Blacks in FB or Basketball. Where athletics, and being athletic is concern, certain, or different body types by rule of thumb does a certain sport differently. And the athletes should never be referred to as a Race, or it being to much, or to little of a race!!!

One thing I know that Bakich said is true--travel ball is too expensive for the average family. My friend's son had to drop out of baseball when he became 13 because the local youth program ended for him at that age. The only option they had was travel ball which they could not afford.

Does this mean we will see DJU on the baseball diamond next year overthrowing the cutoff man?

The MLB drafts directly from HS and blacks are underrepresented so this has nothing to do with the scholarship limit. Since MLB drafts a high % of Hispanics it’s not about racism. Black children prefer to play football and basketball so the development is not there. Also note white children have moved away from football and basketball due to a lack of opportunity. All of these factors have created the current situation

and did pretty well. It held true for many youth leagues that not many black athletes came out to play baseball. They did play youth football and basketball. That carried over to high school. We had a few kids who played baseball and enjoyed it.

If I said that football and basketball are too white, would that be considered racist?

Oh Jesus! And it begins with baseball. He must have read the graphics on the sidelines and in the endzones of Death Valley. Maybe Swinney should take a cue from this guy and make the football team look more like the make-up of the U.S. ... out of 85 scholarships, about 50 would be given to Whites; 11 would go to Blacks; 16 would be extended to Hispanics; 2 would go to Asians; and 6 would go to "other." (To be absolutely safe, 50% of each racial demographic should probably include those who identify as female.) Clemson football would not win very much, but the fans could take loads of pride in the team's diversity. Go Tigers!

This comment, albeit harsh but true, has been taken way out of context to fit a disparaging narrative. If you look at the video, he was at a Project Play Summit in Detroit Michigan. The whole synopsis of that summit was to discuss the opportunities afforded inner-city (predominately black in Detroit) kids to different sports. Sports they would otherwise not choose to participate. If you look at recreation departments around the country, baseball racial demographics are fairly well represented to mirror the racial demographics of the areas those rec departments draw from. The problem is elite travel baseball in America has become the path to D-1/D-2 college and MLB. Elite travel ball is a huge financial burden for families to incur. Most inner-city and underprivileged kids simply can't afford to play. As much as I hate the unfettered NIL influx into college sports, this may be an end-around to funding travel teams for these kids.

I’m fine with having reasonable discussions about diversity.

Saying something is “too white”… or “too” ANY race, is extremely inappropriate and actually racist language.

At the very least it was a poor choice of words to emphasize his point, but you have to remember where he was coaching, (Michigan) and where he was in the video, (Detroit). A lot of big time Michigan boosters were probably in that room. Michigan has big time booster money. His statement was 100% factual but not racist.

not at all shocked that Tigernet posters are freaking out about it.
I'm sure if you asked MLB execs or anyone with a vested interest in high level baseball, they would tell you that African American participation in baseball is a major concern.
This is hardly anything new - it has been a talking point for years now.
