When did it become “The Jewel of the South”? Must have missed the memo.

Jewel of the South sounds better than murder capital of the South.

1985-mid 90's when Buckhead was Buckhead in hey days. "Jewel of the South" reneged since then due to criminal element.

Lived there. Atlanta is a cesspool. Low IQ politicians and low IQ people. It’s great if you like sitting in traffic and installing 3 deadbolts.

There’s a difference between downtown and the outskirts.

Atlanta has a diverse, high-quality workforce thanks to Georgia Tech, Emory, and Morehouse. Drawing from that is a vibrant tech startup community, plus global corporate HQ’s for Delta, Coke, Home Depot, and UPS. I think it hardly qualifies as, “low IQ.”
That said, maybe certain outlier residents of the city did put a dent in the overall average. When exactly did you live here?

I hear you. As a resident for a decade (currently live in ATL too), that is a bit rosy to be fair. GT as an example, what does it look like within a block or two from the institute? Would you walk the area at night? I know the answer. (Not tech square but the backside of campus). It is a mixed bag of a metro. Serious homelessness problem. High cost of living. A lot of activism and the associated protesting. Not to list out all the pros and cons, eg, a lot of good food options, but it isn’t an urban utopia by any stretch.

ATL isnt representative of the southeast. Huge population of folks from all over. Culturally it isn’t anything like the surrounding rural areas of GA or the south in general. Jewel of the south is a weird characterization.

I thought they were referencing the stadium itself. Maybe I misunderstood

Ah, ok. If so, I buy that label. Just don’t wander far from the stadium outside of the game…

Definitely the most important city in the south from an economic perspective.

Lived there for a decade. It’s definitely an economic hub. Not a great place to live IMO. High cost of living, a lot of political activism, protests, etc.

I visited and was glad to get out of there. Place was a dump and a lot of sketchy folks on the streets.
