Money

Money
In 1963 The Beatles wrote and recorded their hit "Can't Buy Me Love." In the song they say:
I'll buy you a diamond ring my friend
If it makes you feel all right
I'll get you anything my friend
If it makes you feel all right
I don't care too much for money
Money can't buy me love

I'll give you all I've got to give
If you say you love me too
I may not have a lot to give
What I've got I'll give to you
I don't care too much for money
money can't buy me love

Can't buy me lo-ove
Everybody tells me so
Can't buy me lo-ove
No, no , no, no

Say you don't need no diamond ring
And I'll be satisfied
Tell me that you want the kind of things
That money just can't buy
I don't care too much for money
Money can't buy me love

Also in 1963 The Beatles remade a 1959 song entitled Money (That's What I Want). That song said:

The best things in life are free
But you can keep them for the birds and bees
Now give me money
That's what I want

You're lovin' gives me a thrill
But you're lovin' don't pay my bills
Now give me money
That's what I want

Money don't get everything it's true
What it don't get, I can't use
Now give me money
That's what I want
That's what I want, yeah

Well now give me money
A lot of money
Wow, yeah, I wanna be free
Oh I want money
That's what I want
That's what I want, well
Now give me money
A lot of money
Wow, yeah, you need money
now, give me money
That's what I want

We probably did not know it but The Beatles could have sounded like the college presidents and athletic directors all across the NCAA in 2012. Instead of diamond rings they could have said facilities, coaches and championship rings.

We hear about how these concerns for the student athlete and how we need to be more concerned about their needs. Then we sign billion dollar television deals and make
new conferences with little regards for geography because of the almighty dollar.

According to published reports yesterday Clemson's athletic department made $61.2 million dollars last year and spent $58.4 million.

South Carolina made $83.8 million and spent $80.5 million last year.

Is it a coincidence South Carolina has had their three best years in the history of the football program and won back-to-back national titles in baseball?

South Carolina made $22.6 million more than Clemson did in their athletic department last year. South Carolina spent $22.1 million more than Clemson athletics last year.

I am not genius but is there some correlation between South Carolina beating Clemson 13 of the last 18 years in the Sears Cup? There has to be some correlation between South Carolina beating Clemson three straight years in football. I would guess that South Carolina's new baseball stadium has something to do with their two national titles in baseball.

I am not sure what effect it has but South Carolina was able to spend 38% more than Clemson in athletics last year. If you are a Clemson fan does this not concern you?

South Carolina's television deal with the SEC is better than Clemson's deal with the ACC. Does this not concern Clemson fans?

There are reports of a new Big XII being able to offer $27-$30 million a year to each school if they expand compared to the recent ACC deal of $17 million. Would $10-$13 million dollars a year worth it to Clemson's athletic department?

Hypothetically, if the numbers stayed the same as last year and South Carolina spends $80 million a year for the next five years and Clemson spends $58 million that would mean South Carolina would spend over $100 million more than Clemson over a five year span. Would that get your attention?

You can break down every aspect of conference expansion in every different way you like. The facts say that the ACC opts to look at basketball and U.S. News and World Reports' academic rankings of schools while the rest of the country is looking at football revenue. West Virginia was turned down in favor of Syracuse and Pittsburgh. The ACC made a great mistake and doesn't get what all other conferences have figured out. This is about football. Stay in the ACC and Clemson is football school stuck in a basketball conference.

If Florida State leaves the ACC and Notre Dame does not join the ACC then Clemson football would be in trouble in terms of perception and more importantly dollars. How many hundreds of millions of dollars does it take for this to get people's attention? How many more times and how many more ways can Clemson fall behind South Carolina before people take notice?

This decision is about money.
