Clemson Announces Fall Baseball Signees

Clemson, SC - Clemson Head Coach Jack Leggett announced the signing of 11 baseball players to national letters of intent for the fall signing period. All 11 players will play either their senior season of high school or second season of junior college ball in 2001.

Four of the players are ranked among the top 100 players in the country according to Baseball America. They are shortstop Josh Burrus (#41), righthander Scott Tyler (#42), catcher Collin Mahoney (#53), and utility player Bart Hunton (#68).

"We went into the recruiting process looking for players who could hit," states Leggett. Clemson signed eight position players in the fall signing period.

"Josh Burrus (Marietta, GA) was one of our top recruits," says Leggett. "He can play any of the infield spots and has great athletic ability. We look forward to him stepping right in and helping us out."

"Garrick Evans (Burke, VA) is another player who is very athletic and can play many different infield positions. David Slevin (Port Saint Lucie, FL) is a junior college transfer who is one of the best second base prospects in the JUCO ranks. Bart Hunton (Dublin, OH) is another infielder with a tremendous upside."

"In the outfield, Robert Valiente (Tampa, FL) is a player who will be an outstanding hitter with great instincts. Jeff Hourigan (Monroe, CT) is a big, strong hitter who can hit to all fields. He is one of the best hitters in the New England area. L.J. DeMaino (Danvers, MA) is an outfielder who is extremely fast. He will do things that Casey Stone has done for us."

"Behind the plate, Collin Mahoney (Bronx, NY) is one of the best catchers in the country. He has trememdous power. He along with Hunton will both compete at the catching position."

"Scott Tyler (Downington, PA) is one of three pitchers we signed. Tyler is a big presence. He is tall, at 6-5, and throws well over 90 mph. Adam Walker (Oak Ridge, TN) and Tyler Lumsden (Roanoke, VA) are two other pitchers we signed who will be valuable contributors in years to come."
