CLEMSON - Charlie Whitehurst's first career start at quarterback for Clemson came against the Duke Blue Devils in 2002. Thirty-seven consecutive starts later, an injured Whitehurst gave way to backup Will Proctor.

Proctor's first start? Also, against the Blue Devils.

The redshirt junior threw for 201 yards and two touchdowns Saturday, leading Clemson to a 49-20 victory over visiting Duke at Death Valley. The Homecoming matchup was played before an announced crowd of 77,000.

The Tigers (5-4, 3-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) rolled to the victory behind Proctor's steady play and an effective running attack, led by Reggie Merriweather and James Davis.

Merriweather (18 carries, 104 yards) scored on runs of 19, eight and 12 yards. Davis, in his first extensive playing time since suffering the broken wrist Oct. 13 at N.C. State, gained 85 yards on eight carries - including an 18-yard scoring run.

""Anytime you get the type of rushing output we got today, it's going to help your offense, said Bowden. "Rob Spence has done a good job with our running game and we have some new blocking schemes this year. It's not just the offensive line that helps our running game, it's the tight ends and fullbacks."

Meanwhile, Proctor played near flawless football in his first starting role. He completed 13-of-21 passes and tossed two touchdowns - both to Chansi Stuckey (11 and 40 yards). Stuckey finished the day with five catches for 112 yards.

The two scoring receptions were the first of his career. Stuckey became the third player in Clemson history to account for a touchdown four different ways. He was a quarterback as a freshman and threw two touchdown passes at Wake Forest. He scored on a

touchdown run at South Carolina later that year. Earlier this year

he scored on a punt return against Texas A&M.

Proctor also had a one-yard scoring run.

The only concern for the Tigers was Duke's (1-9, 0-7) suddenly effective passing attack. Blue Devils' freshman quarterback Zack Asack threw for 328 yards and a touchdown. He was sacked once and picked off once, the interception by C.J. Gaddis on the final play of the game.

"We didn't play fundamentally as well as I would have liked all week in practice. We gave up deep balls in practice," said Clemson defensive coordinator Vic Koenning. "We've got some issues. We've just got to keep working."

The Blue Devils have lost seven straight since their lone victory over Division I-AA VMI.

"We had too many early mistakes," said Duke head coach Ted Roof. "That got us in a hole that we couldn't get out of. But you have to credit Clemson. They're a really good team"

Meanwhile, Bowden - while praising Proctor's performance - said Saturday could be a one-shot deal for his backup quarterback.

"If Charlie is healthy, he'll start (against Florida State)," he said. "There's no question about that."
