Clemson Sweeps Doubleheader & Series Over Terrapins

Clemson totaled 12 hits and Jonathan Meyer pitched 7.0 scoreless innings in relief in the Tigers’ 7-2 victory over Maryland in the second game of a doubleheader at Bob Smith Stadium on Saturday. The Tigers, who swept the series 3-0 and won their eighth game in a row away from home, improved to 24-17 overall and 12-9 in the ACC. The Terrapins dropped to 25-17 overall and 7-14 in ACC play.

Meyer (2-2) entered the game in the third inning with the Tigers trailing 2-1 and pitched the rest of the way to earn the win. In 7.0 innings pitched, he allowed just four hits, no runs, and no walks with two strikeouts in throwing only 70 pitches (53 strikes).

Terrapin starter David Carroll (3-2) suffered the loss. He gave up eight hits, five runs, and one walk with three strikeouts in 6.2 innings pitched.

The Terrapins took their first lead of the series in the first inning. Alfredo Rodriguez led off with a walk and Tomo Delp walked two batters later. K.J. Hockaday flared an 0-2 pitch down the right-field line for a double to plate Rodriguez, then Ryan Holland grounded out to second to score Delp.

Clemson responded with a run in the second inning. Phil Pohl led off with a hit-by-pitch and advanced to third two batters later on Jon McGibbon’s one-out double to right field. Spencer Kieboom then lofted a sacrifice fly to center to score Pohl.

The Tigers tied the score with two outs in the fifth inning when Jason Stolz belted a solo home run to center, his third long ball of the year. It was Clemson’s first homer in its last 12 ACC games.

In the seventh inning, Kieboom lined a one-out single to center, then Brad Felder ripped a double to right field to advance Kieboom to third. Stolz hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Kieboom and give Clemson the lead. Steve Wilkerson followed with a two-out single to right-center to score Felder, then Thomas Brittle hit a triple to right field to score Wilkerson and extend his hitting streak to 14 games.

Pohl gave Clemson a four-run lead in the eighth inning when he led off with a long home run to left field, his sixth long ball of the season.

In the ninth inning, Stolz laced an 0-2 pitch to left-center for a one-out double. After moving to third on Wilkerson’s groundout to first, Stolz scored on Brittle’s two-out, infield single.

Wilkerson, Brittle, McGibbon, and Stolz all had two hits apiece for Clemson, who totaled three doubles, one triple, and two homers among its 12 hits. Stolz went 2-for-3 with a homer, double, two RBIs, and two runs, while Brittle added two RBIs.

Jack Cleary and Jordan Hagel had two hits apiece to pace Maryland, who accumulated six hits in the contest.

Clemson will host Coastal Carolina at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Tuesday at 6:30 PM.

The Tigers, who took a 2-0 series lead, improved to 23-17 overall and 11-9 in the ACC. The Terrapins dropped to 25-16 overall and 7-13 in ACC play.

The Tigers scored three runs in the first inning and never relinquished their lead. The Terrapins scored two runs in the sixth inning to narrow Clemson’s lead to 5-3, but Kent escaped a bases-loaded situation and cruised the rest of the way to give the Tigers their seventh win in a row away from home.

Brett Harman (5-3), the first of two Terrapin hurlers, suffered the loss. He yielded 10 hits, five runs, and no walks with five strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched. Michael Boyden pitched 4.0 scoreless innings of two-hit ball to close out the game.

In the fifth inning, Brittle led off with a bunt single and stole second. Two batters later with one out, Pohl belted an 0-2 pitch off the wall in left-center for a single to score Brittle.

The Terrapins cut Clemson’s lead in half in the sixth inning. Kyle Convissar reached on an infield single with one out and Michael Montville walked two batters later with two outs. Jack Cleary hit another infield single and Korey Wacker slapped a single to left field to score Convissar. Alfredo Rodriguez reached on Maryland’s third infield single of the frame to score Montville, cutting Clemson’s lead to 5-3.

In the ninth inning, Delp grounded a two-out single through the left side, but K.J. Hockaday popped up in the infield to end the game.

Pohl led Clemson’s 12-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while Brittle went 2-for-4 with two runs, one walk, and one steal. Of Clemson’s 12 hits, seven came on 0-2 (4) or 1-2 (3) pitches.

Cleary went 4-for-4 to pace Maryland, who amassed 11 hits. However, Maryland left 10 runners on base and scored just three of its 14 baserunners.

Clemson and Maryland will play the second game of the doubleheader and series-finale on Saturday at approximately 2:20 PM.
