I was born in Greenville, SC, studied at Furman University (B.A. History, 1983), Covenant Theological Seminary (M.Div. & M.A. 1986 & 1987), and the University of Edinburgh, Scotland (Ph.D, 1995). I’ve been a Clemson fan all my life. My Dad was from Union, SC and he and all my cousins taught me that all “the good folk” of South Carolina pulled for the Tigers. I learned the Tiger Rag and the cadence count (C-L-E-M-S-O—N!) as a child. I've been privileged to attend a number of very special games: the 1978 Gator Bowl, when young Danny Ford’s Tigers beat Ohio State, the 1982 Orange Bowl, when Clemson won the National Championship against Nebraska, the thrilling Louisville game in The Valley in 2016, when Deshaun outdueled Lamar Jackson, the 2016 Fiesta Bowl beatdown of Ohio State, the epic January 2017 National Championship game when we beat Alabama in the last second, and more. I’ve lived away from South Carolina most of my life. While I was doing doctoral work in Edinburgh, Scotland (before the days of the internet) my parents would hold the phone up to a radio so that I could listen to a few minutes of the 4th quarter of Clemson football games over a very expensive international call! Living here in Mississippi for the past 28 years, in the heart of SEC country, I used to have to get pretty creative to follow my Tigers, but now I follow along all the time by TV, radio and internet. In December of 2015, I watched the ACC Championship Game from Jakarta, Indonesia via internet.
