Clemson tops ACC for first time in 247Sports Composite rankings

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney says he isn’t all that into recruiting rankings, but he will take results from Wednesday’s National Signing Day.

Clemson captured ACC recruiting crown for the first time in 247Sports' Composite Rankings going back to 2000.

The site averages 247Sports' ranking as well as Rivals.com, ESPN and more recruiting websites, and Clemson checked in at No. 6 overall in the final rankings.

The Tigers trailed Miami midway through Signing Day before 5-star WR Justyn Ross announced his Clemson commitment. Miami finished the day in eighth in the rankings. In average prospect ranking, Clemson finished 4th in the 247Sports Composite (93.45).

Transitioning coaches after a rough season, Florida State recovered with a big Signing Day push to move up to 11th in the standings.

This was the first recruiting class since 2010 that Alabama didn't top the rankings, with Georgia matching Clemson in 5-stars (7) in a bigger overall class (26).

In a 17-man group, Clemson signed seven rated as a 5-star prospect by at least one recruiting site, with 14 drawing at least a four-star rating.

247Sports.com named Clemson as the ‘Best D-line Class,’ where the Tigers added three 5-star prospects (DEs Xavier Thomas and K.J. Henry; DT Josh Belk).

“The Tigers already have the best defensive line in the country. And now look at the class the Tigers are getting,” 247’s Steve Wiltfong writes. “Clemson’s got the only 247Sports Composite 5-star defensive tackle in Josh Belk, who strikes me as a mini-Da’Ron Payne. On the edge, there’s 5-star end KJ Henry. Xavier Thomas, the No. 4 player in the 247Sports Composite, is ranked as a strongside defensive end but he could morph into an outside linebacker. He’s in the mix for best pass-rusher in the class.”

2. Ohio State - 317.06
