WATCH: Navy sailor surprises family at Clemson-Citadel game

by - Assoc. Editor -

Clemson's 61-3 thumping of The Citadel on Saturday was only surpassed by the impressive military festivities throughout the day that was planned for Military Appreciation Day.

A special appearance by Grammy-winning musician Lee Greenwood to sing "God Bless the USA" during halftime was a highlight for many, but one family had another surprise in store.

Marci Scruggs and her family were shocked when her son Austyn returned home early from Naval school to reunite at Death Valley.

William Scruggs posted the following on Facebook to give more details of the surprise.

This was a total surprise for my wife and kids. My son and I planned this months ago. He was not due to come home until December 15th. A special thanks to Mike Money, Clemson Athletic director and the whole camera team. Thank you for helping me pull this off in front of over 80,000 people. We have 4 generations of veterans in our family, so this was a very special moment. Thank you Clemson University, from the bottom of our hearts! We are all so glad our boy is HOME! Go Tigers!!!. Also a small note our son played football with Kelly Bryant at Wren High School. So this was also a double blessing for him. To see his family and his friend.
