WATCH: Lee, players discuss sweep of Tribe |
CLEMSON – Clemson’s offense wasn't great during the season’s opening weekend, but it was good enough. The pitching, on the other hand, was really good as the Tigers swept the Tribe.
No. 12 Clemson mustered just five hits Sunday but scored two runs but it was enough to defeat Willliam & Mary 2-1 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium as the Tigers started the season with a three-game sweep. Clemson improves to 3-0 while William & Mary fell to 0-3. This is the first time in Clemson baseball history that the Tigers have opened the year with 3 wins by 1 run. It was the first opening-weekend sweep for Clemson since 2009. Clemson hit just .230 (20-for-87) in the series, but the pitching staff allowed just seven runs in 28 innings. Tiger pitchers struck out 36 hitters and walked just two on the weekend. Jake Higginbotham was stellar in his return to the mound, picking up the win. Ryley Gilliam pitched the ninth for his first save of the season. Gilliam picked up the win Friday night.
