Seven Tigers earn All-ACC Academic honors

by -

Christian Wilkins heads a record tying seven Clemson football players named to the All-ACC Academic Team on Wednesday. The only other Clemson team to have seven members named to the team was Swinney’s first squad in 2009.

Duke had the most selections to the 201 team with 13, while Pittsburgh was second with eight. The Tigers were third with seven selections, while Syracuse and Virginia were tied for fourth with six apiece.

In addition to Wilkins, Travis Etienne, Justin Falcinelli, Sean Pollard, James Skalski, Will Spiers, and K’Von Wallace were named.

Wilkins was a first-team All-American on the field, while Falcinelli was named first-team All-ACC center. Pollard, a starting tackle, and Etienne, Clemson’s leading rusher, were both third-team All-ACC selections on the field.

Wilkins was named Academic All-ACC for the third straight year and will have a chance to join former center Dalton Freeman as the only four time Academic All-ACC selection in school history next year. Wilkins is already the first Clemson defensive lineman and just the fourth defensive player in school history to be named Academic All-ACC three time.

All seven Clemson players named to the Academic All-ACC team for 2017 return for the 2018 season.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

All 14 ACC Football member institutions were represented on the team: Duke (13), Pitt (8), Clemson (7), Syracuse (6), Virginia (6), Louisville (5), NC State (5), Wake Forest (5), Miami (3), Virginia Tech (3), Boston College (2), Florida State (2), Georgia Tech (2) and North Carolina (1).

The ACC has selected an All-ACC Academic Football Team every year since 1954. The team was chosen from a pool of 144 ACC Football student-athletes who were nominated by their schools.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all-conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
