Rally falls short for Tigers in Charleston Classic final

by -

A late Clemson rally fell short as Temple held on to a 67-60 win in the Charleston Classic final Sunday night.

Down by as much as 11 points in the final 7:30, Brad Brownell's Tigers cut the lead to four three times with under a minute left. A turnover on an inbounds pass with 50 seconds to go gave Clemson a chance to cut that down even more, but a 3-pointer by Donte Grantham went off the mark.

Clemson trailed by six at the half, where they out-shot the Owls, but were minus-eight in rebound margin and Temple scored 15 points off of seven Clemson turnovers.

The Owls extended their lead to double-digits for the first time with a little over 14 minutes left during one of a couple second-half Clemson scoring droughts.

The Tigers finished with 18 turnovers, which Temple turned into 25 points, to Temple's 11, which Clemson scored seven points on.

Shelton Mitchell led the Tigers effort with 16 points, five rebounds and four assists. Grantham fouled out late with 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Grantham was named to the all-Charleston Classic team after a pair of 20-plus-point efforts in Clemson wins over Ohio and Hofstra.

Temple's Quinton Rose posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, adding four assists.

The loss was the Tigers' first of the season, falling to 4-1. Temple improved to 3-0.

Clemson returns to action at home Friday at 3 p.m. versus Texas Southern.
