Humphries sticks to word with Titans, over late Patriots' push |
Reports surfaced Monday afternoon that former Clemson receiver
Adam Humphries had agreed to a four-year deal worth $39 million with the Tennessee Titans.
Thursday, he officially signed the deal that guarantees $19 million within that contract, but that wasn't before the reigning Super Bowl champs made a late overture. Humphries confirmed reports that the New England Patriots made a late push on Tuesday, which was said to offer more money per season with a higher guaranteed figure. The former Tigers target said the free agent process was tough but he was going to stick with what he agreed on with the Titans, which had some familiarity with Humphries with GM Jon Robinson formerly with the Tampa Bay Buccanneers. “I was weighing the options between both teams, and obviously they have a lot of success with guys similar to me,” Humphries told TitansOnline. “When I committed to Tennessee, obviously I am a man of my word, and I am going to keep my word there. It is tough, and it is a big decision, and it is a decision that will impact me for the rest of my life. “I took a lot of thought into that, and having family around me was good. But once I committed to Tennessee I was really excited to be a Titan, and I still am.” The Dorman (S.C.) product is coming off of a career season, where he totaled 76 catches for 816 yards and five touchdowns. The former undrafted free agent has 219 receptions for 2,329 yards and nine scores over his career. According to the Titans, Humphries ranked No. 1 in the NFL in first downs gained (42) and second in receptions (59) and yards after catch (319) for receivers lining up in the slot last season. He is ready to get on the field with former Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota. “I’m excited to work with him,” Humphries told reporters. “I got a text from him a couple of days ago - he is down in Hawaii working out – and I have heard nothing but good things about him.
