Clemson coordinator named top assistant 'on the rise'

by - Staff Writer -

Two Clemson coordinators were named among the top-20 assistant coaches on the rise by Yahoo on Friday, which was led by co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott.

Elliott, the reigning Broyles Award winner for the nation's top assistant, was featured in the Yahoo piece, telling his story of working locally at Michelin out of college before jumping into the coaching world.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said Elliott is the ideal candidate for a head coaching job someday.

“What are you looking for in a head coach?” Swinney said of Elliott, who was linked to UCF head coaching job last December. “Character? Intelligence? And commitment? And loyalty? Knowledge? Someone who loves players and is going to do things the right way. He’s a pretty good candidate.”

Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables, who became the nation's highest-paid coordinator this summer, checked in at No. 13 - mostly due to his current track toward sticking around Clemson for awhile.

"He’s shown little desire to become a head coach other than at the bluest of blue bloods," Yahoo writes. "He’s been one of the choosiest assistants of this generation. (Hence why he’s so low on this list.)"

Clemson co-offensive coordinator Jeff Scott was mentioned as an assistant also considered for the list.
