Five-star WR Ross on Clemson: They put receivers in the league every year

BEAVERTON, OR – Justyn Ross is one of the nation’s most highly coveted wide receivers, a 5-star with the size and speed to be a star on the next level. However, Ross didn’t want to make any life decisions or think about making his college choice until his mom came home.

Charay Franklin, a truck driver and dispatcher in the Army National Guard, spent most of the last 11 months in Kuwait, but she arrived home last month and Ross knew he could get down to the business of recruiting.

The homecoming was understated, but Ross was just happy to have his mom home.

“I was asleep in the bed and she walked in my room and just woke me up,” Ross told TigerNet at Nike’s The Opening earlier this month. “I was seeing her for the first time in 10 or 11 months. It was great. I just love having her here. It's amazing having her home because she gets to interact with me and go on all of my recruiting trips.”

With his mom home, Ross released a top-five of Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida and Florida State and he now has another set of eyes and ears on the recruiting circuit.

One of the first stops Ross and Franklin made was to Clemson, and he said his mom came away impressed with her visit to Tiger Town.

“I think she loved it. Me and her don't really talk about it a lot, but I'm pretty sure she liked it,” Ross said.

“She's leaving the decision to me, but at the end I know she'll come back and tell me where she's the most comfortable. It's not really a lot that they have to do. It's just about where me and mom feel comfortable.”

Ross said his mom enjoyed learning about the academics Clemson has to offer, but she also took the time to explore the Tigers’ new football operations complex.

“The academic part was her favorite. She loves academics, so I feel like that was probably her favorite,” he said. “When she walked into the new facility, she was like, 'Wow.' It's amazing. Everything out there is brand new. She went down the slide. She called herself an athlete after she landed.”

Clemson has a spot in Ross’ top five because of the reputation they off the total package.

“The first thing I noticed when I went there is it's a great environment. They put receivers in the league every year, so that's a great stat because everybody wants to go to the NFL,” he said. “Finally, the relationships I have with the coaches is amazing.”

The home-state Tide are also high on Ross’ list because of his relationship with head coach Nick Saban.

“Coach Saban, we always talk. Whenever we talk, we talk about my life and not always football,” he said. “He wants to know how I'm doing. They've really done all they can do. It's just about me being comfortable and where my mom is comfortable.”

Up next for Ross is a possible trip for Clemson’s All In Cookout, but there isn’t a specific timeline for a decision.

“Maybe. My team has a 7-on-7 the next day in Alabama, but I'm going to try (to make the trip for the All in Cookout), he said. “I don't have a date right now, but it could be anytime. All of them really have the chance right now. I'll make a decision whenever I feel comfortable.”
