Clemson commit living the life in Hawaii as part of Polynesian Bowl |
While his friends and family battle another cold snap, ice and snow, 2018 Clemson commit B.T. Potter is living the life in Hawaii.
The Rock Hill (SC) South Pointe kicker left Charlotte earlier this week and traveled to Honolulu to participate in the 2018 Polynesian Bowl, which will take place on Jan. 20 at Aloha Stadium in Central Oahu, Hawaii. The Polynesian Bowl is a high school football all-star game, organized by the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame (www.PolynesianFootballHOF.org) that features 100 of the world’s elite high school players. A majority of players in the game will be of Polynesian ancestry. Dick Vermeil and Terry Donahue will serve as head coaches. Potter said he isn’t an experienced flyer, so he stayed up all night the night before his flight so he could sleep. Here is Potter’s diary from his first few days on the island. “Every time I’ve flown, it has really been long distances, so that’s definitely the longest flight. It was 12 hours. I just started flying about a year ago. It awesome,” Potter told TigerNet. “The night before I came here I stayed up all night. We left my house at like 4 a.m. so I got on the plane and slept pretty much the whole time. I watched a movie, too. “Last night (Monday) we had like a jazz party to find out what team we were on. We’ve had team meetings and then we got to go out last night and walk around a little bit. After practice, we’re going to a waterpark and then tonight we have another team meeting. “It’s really pretty. I didn’t expect it to be anything like this, honestly. It’s one of the prettiest places I’ve ever been in my life. You see pictures and you’d think that it’s just like that in some places but it’s like that all over. “This morning (Wednesday) we went to breakfast and we had practice for the Warrior Dance (Haka) thing that they do here before games. We just got done practice. We’re going to the Polynesian Culture Center later, which is about an hour away from our hotel. We’ve had a good day. “I’m definitely sunburned. It feels pretty good but if you walk outside with shorts and no shirt on, you’re fine. I’m actually liking that it’s snowing back home because I get to talk to my friends if I get bored.” Potter mentioned that he has been learning to perform the haka, an island warrior dance, a ritual dance performed before University of Hawaii games. The dance dates back centuries in Hawaii and is one of several warrior dances from the South Pacific. “I’ve been learning a lot about the culture and stuff like that, but we’re also learning stuff on the field that will make us even better. It’s really funny. Last night we were practicing. There were a lot of people there and they were keeping us in step and it was pretty funny. “The best food I’ve had is probably a bag of chips. I’m a very picky eater. I don’t like much of the food that they have here so I’ve been eating all of the wrong food. The most fun thing we’ve done is yesterday we were supposed to go to a waterpark but it was closed, so I got to go in the ocean and that was a lot of fun.” Benefits of being a Chris Sailer Kicking Kicker.
