Seth Beer, Tigers hammer Boston College for series sweep

Beer watches his 10th homer of the season take flight

CLEMSON – Thor’s Hammer has nothing on Seth Beer’s bat.

Clemson’s sensational junior continues to heat up, hitting another homer Saturday, and No. 8 Clemson defeated Boston College 8-3 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, completing a series sweep. Clemson improves to 22-6 overall and 8-4 in the ACC, while Boston College falls to 9-16 overall and 4-8 in ACC play.

Beer homered in all three games of the series, going 5-for-10 with five runs scored, seven driven in and three homers. For the week, he was 8-for-13 with seven runs scored, four homers and 12 driven in.

Jordan Greene also homered for Clemson Saturday. Travis Marr pitched 3 1/3 strong innings in relief to pick up the win, giving up one hit, walking one and striking out two. Marr improves to 2-0 on the season.

The Tigers got off to a quick start in Saturday’s series finale. Logan Davidson led off the game with a single up the middle, advanced to third on a wild pitch and passed ball and scored on a sac fly to left by Beer. Back-to-back doubles by Patrick Cromwell and Chris Williams made it 2-0 Clemson after the first frame.

The Eagles began clawing away in the second. Jake Alu hit a two-out double to right field and scored on a Brian Dempsey single through the right side to cut Clemson’s lead to 2-1 after two.

Boston College added another run in the third inning. Chris Galland reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a single to right field to tie the game at 2-2.

The Eagles took the lead in the fourth. Alu led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a fielder’s choice, third on a sac bunt and scored on a wild pitch by Mat Clark, giving Boston College a 3-2 lead.

Clemson’s offense came alive in the fifth. Greene worked a five-pitch walk and scored on a double to deep right by Davidson, who advanced to third on a fielding error by the third baseman. Davidson scored on a passed ball. Seth Beer followed with a bomb onto the batting cages in right-center – his 10th of the season – to give Clemson a 5-3 advantage.

Greene homered in the bottom of the seventh, a shot over the wall in left, the second of his career, for a 6-3 lead.

The Eagles loaded the bases against two Clemson relievers in the top of the eighth, but Ryley Gilliam came in and struck out pinch-hitter Jake Goodreau for the final out.

Bryce Teodosio shook off his recent struggles and smacked a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth for the final Clemson runs. Gilliam pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his fourth save of the season.

Clemson returns to action Tuesday, hosting Coastal Carolina at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Tigers travel to Notre Dame next weekend for a three-game series against the Fighting Irish.
