Elite Georgia sophomore defensive end recaps rare Clemson offer

Clemson doesn't dispense many offers to sophomores, so when Myles Murphy received the news he knew it was special.

The 4-star 2020 Powder Springs (GA) Hillgrove defensive end is the second-ranked defensive end and third overall player in the state of Georgia according to 247.

Including Clemson, the talented sophomore already owns 10 offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Penn State, South Carolina and Virginia Tech.

Knowing that Clemson usually waits to distribute offers until a player’s senior year, Murphy told TigerNet he was a little surprised when the offer came across.

“When they told me I had the offer they said they don't really offer sophomores,” Murphy told TigerNet Saturday evening. “They said I had the offer but that I couldn't post it until after the semester is over. (defensive ends) Coach Lemanski Hall actually said I could go ahead and put it out there. It's a very prestigious achievement. It shows my potential. It's very exciting. I'm kind of at a loss for words, but I'm just enjoying the process right now.”

The 6-5, 240-pound prospect attended a Clemson spring practice and said he enjoyed watching the defensive linemen go through the “Win” drill and the physicality of Clemson’s practice.

“I was there five or six weeks. It was very exciting. It was the only physical contact that I got to see since football ended last year. It was very exciting, especially with those dudes,” Murphy said.

Murphy came away even more impressed with how freshmen ends K.J. Henry and Xavier Thomas have been able to quickly transform their skillsets from high school to college.

“What impressed me most was probably the way the early enrollees' play has quickly transformed to college football play,” Murphy said. “It was more aggressive and a lot faster and how they're able to adapt their plan on to that field. Coach Swinney has done a good job transforming their work off the field. I heard a lot of good stuff from K.J. Henry and a lot of other d-linemen that are there.”

As Murphy begins to plan his summer travels, he knows he wants to attend a session of head coach Dabo Swinney’s high school camp, but he also wants to explore options further away from home.

“I would say most definitely the first semester of my senior year,” he said. “I'm not sure if it's going to be the beginning or the end though. They're honestly one of my top picks. I plan to get back for a camp. I want to visit some other schools also. I'm trying to go more outside of this region of the country. I want to go up north and out west.”
