The coach needs to position Beer where other teams can’t pitch around him. What the Tigers desperately needs is another power hitter. Beer also needs to cut down on his strikeouts but he is definitely a guy who should be on this list. No one will agree with this but I would at least experiment with Beer batting in the lead off spot. His chance to get more at bats would increase and that is a plus. I remember late in the season,the Red Sox batted the great Ted Williams in the first spot for a while to get him more at bats ....
And Beer ‘aint’ a Williams! By a long shot.

The best hitter in D1 baseball last year had a 16% SO rate across his 3 years
The guy with the most home runs last year had a 17% SO rate across his 3 years

Beer is a combination of both of these types of players and is at 10.63% after two years.

Gimme a break..they play a shift on him every time and pitch around him.

The one thing you are right about is protection, i think the coaches are well aware of that issue.
