July 4th - Remember the purpose, History!

Jul 4, 2018, 9:17 AM

Dear Tigers: During the day, no matter your activity, take time to read the last section of the Declaration of Independence. Reflect the purpose of those who signed the document and most importantly learn their fates. The British considered the act to be treason and dealt with the signers and their families accordingly.

Google an article about this act of tremendous significance to us all and everyone will take an entirely different perspective and attitude toward this day. God bless America and those who gave to make and then keep us in a land of freedom!

Picked up this interesting fact the last time I was in Philadelphia. Some of the local Philadelphia patriots would meet secretly in a section of Philadelphia that was under Typhoid Fever quarantine because the Brits would not set foot in that part of town. Pretty smart, also incredibly dangerous, especially in that era.

Here is a little known fact

South Carolina declared independence from England March 26, 1776, over three months before the 13 colonies did.
**************************************************

https://www.sciway.net/hist/governors/

On March 26, 1776 – just over three months before the Declaration of Independence was signed – South Carolina adopted a state constitution drafted by a provincial congress, becoming the first independent government in the colonies.

The state's first president, John Rutledge, and its first vice-president, Henry Laurens, were elected by the General Assembly. The titles of these offices were changed to governor and lieutenant governor by the Constitution of 1778.

Prior to the 1776 constitution, South Carolina did have governors, but they were not elected. These officials were appointed by the Lords Proprietors from 1670 to 1719, then by the British government from 1719 to 1775.

And also remember a piece of paper didn't make us free.

A relatively few (3 percent) young and old men alike picked up their Kentucky rifles, kissed their mothers, wives, girlfriends, and kids goodbye--some forever--and marched to places like the Cow Pens, Kings Mountain, Ninety-Six, Camden, Brattonsville, Fort Moultrie, Williamson's Plantation, Musgrove Mill, and John's Island where they were willing to stand and do battle against the greatest army and navy on earth so that their sons and grandsons might one day have freedoms like no other civilized peoples on earth had ever enjoyed.

Not to mention getting to watch our Tigers play for their third National Championship this year where the Blue Ridge yawns its greatness.

God has blessed America.

Let America once again bless God.

And Go Tigers!
