Starting 5

Oct 18, 2017, 1:15 PM

Do we go big
Mitchell
DeVoe
Grantham
Thomas
Skara
Or small and move Thomas to center and Grantham forward with Reed being the third guard?

I'm sure Brownlee will do the right thing

Oct 18, 2017, 1:20 PM

He's been taking us to the tourney regularly, and I trust him to make the right choice.

I sure hope this is the year he starts to. We have the players once again IMO.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I wonder how many more years he can miss the tourney and

keep his job. Must be nice.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm pretty sure Thomas will already be the center, with Skara at the 4. You could also interchange Reed with DeVoe or if Skara is out we have a smaller line up as you mentioned.

Re: Starting 5

I think Thomas is already the 5 while Skara is a 4.

As for the guards, I think Mitchell, Reed, and Devoe will all play in a fluid rotation sometimes all at once when Grantham is on the bench. I'm curious to see how many guys play, I think we finally have some solid depth with the 5 you named and then Reed, Donnal, Spencer, and then the freshmen AJ Oliver and Sims.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mitchell and Grantham definitely....

Oct 18, 2017, 2:20 PM

and i'd be shocked if Eli T doesn't start...after that..only BB knows (or will know)

anyone know who started the games in Spain?

between DeVoe and Reed? close call

i bet we see the 'small' lineup of Mitchell, DeVoe, Reed, Grantham, & Thomas on the floor often this year

we may be seeing the most talented - and ACC-ready - group of freshmen in years

Re: Starting 5

Skara next a 3 and will start there. Donte is sliding up to the 4 to create matchup issues. Thomas will start every game at the 5 unlesss he’s injured.

Mitchell
Devoe
Skara
Grantham
Thomas

The only real spot that I’m unsure of isn’t Devoe/Reed at the 2. But because of defense, fairly sure Devoe will get the nod.

Skara

Oct 19, 2017, 8:23 AM

think you're right about Skara he will be a starter....after reading this:

Re: Skara

Oct 20, 2017, 9:31 AM

Yep. He’ll definitely start.

Brownell said,” We needed him last year. He is our best defender. And it’s not close. Like it is not close at all. He is our best defensive player by far.”

I love this.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

he was first off the bench

Nov 3, 2017, 8:10 AM

surprised to see Reed and DeVoe both start

Yep I was wrong.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i was with you

Nov 3, 2017, 9:23 AM

after reading the 'best defender by far' quote, i was sure he would be a starter

i like Skara's game.

i think he will a major contributor this season

Re: he was first off the bench

Nov 3, 2017, 9:32 AM [ in reply to he was first off the bench ]

I like that line up sometimes but that is pretty small. I think we have a pretty good rotation though. Will be interesting to see how the year plays out. Hopefully we shoot like the second half last night. Who started the second half?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: he was first off the bench

Nov 3, 2017, 9:50 AM

Same guys.

Skara provides a lot, especially rebounding which is sorely needed. I don’t think we can afford to start games off with 3 and 1/2 (Grantham) guards.

Re: Starting 5

Mitchell-Devoe-Reed
Devoe-Reed-Oliver
Grantham-Spencer-Reed
Skara-Simms-William
Thomas-Donnal

I think defense is the key to this year, as it was in characteristically the biggest shortcoming last year. I think we see a mix of half court pressure and zone. I love the physical athleticism both Simms and William could bring.

The comments regarding Skara's defense were telling as to where Brad's focus is. That said, we really need the backcourt and Grantham to hit three's. That opens up the middle for Thomas, who if he can learn to avoid foul trouble, could be an offensive force inside.

Going to be an interesting year as due to attrition in the league I expect a lot of balance after Duke and maybe Miami, who I think is the leagues second best team on paper.
