On This Date: 1965 Clemson- 21 NC State- 7

Sep 18, 2018, 8:34 AM

September 18, 1965
Death Valley, SC

The 1965 season got off to a good start at home with a win over NC State. On their second series, the Tigers moved the ball 75 yards in 13 plays, with Thomas Ray scoring from two yards out.

While NC State took advantage of a Clemson fumble to score a tying touchdown after a 26-yard drive in the second quarter, the Tigers’ steady play in the second half netted a second touchdown by Ray from the five and a diving score from the two by fullback Bo Ruffner. The final score was Clemson 21, NC State 7.

The 1965 Tigers featured four First-Team All-ACC players in Johnny Boyette (OT), Bill Hecht (LB), Hugh Mauldin (TB) and Butch Sursavage (DE). Sursavage was just the third sophomore in school history to be named First-Team All-ACC. Thomas Ray would be named the team's MVP

Clemson and NC State would go on to share the 1965 ACC Title.

*Note: pictures from google - it is possible one of these may have been mislabeled - in the bottom picture, our helmets have numbers on them, in the top picture, a "C" similar to other photos from the 1965 team i've seen.

I thought at first that was the orange shoes game but that must have been two years later

Look at all those empty seats in the first picture, smh. The fire marshall in 1965 must have been a real stickler.

I was there - my junior year! And yes - I’m pretty sure the orange shoes game was 1967.

If people were as good as their obituary - and products were as good as advertised - this would truly be a wonderful world !!

White jerseys at home. I do remember the 67 game had us in orange with the orange shoes. That was high school day and six or seven of us crowded in my mom's Galaxie 500 and drove to tiger town. Free tickets, too. The wolf got too close to the Clemson sideline that day and a mob of Rats ensued, tearing off his tail.
