ACC Baseball News and Notes

ACC teams posted a 29-16 record versus non-conference opposition the first weekend of the season, with Atlantic Division teams Florida State, Clemson and Louisville all getting out of the gate at 3-0 … Nine ACC teams are ranked in a national poll this week, led by Florida State, Miami, and North Carolina who are ranked in the top 10 in at least one poll.

Highlights of opening weekend include Notre Dame taking two of three at No. 9 LSU … Junior Eric Gilgenbach keyed the Fighting Irish by batting .385 with three home runs and nine RBIs in the three-game series … That included a two-homer, seven-RBI game in Sunday’s win that clinched the series … Gilgenbach hit a three-run homer to give Notre Dame the lead in the fourth inning, then capped the win with a grand slam in the ninth … He also made several key defensive plays in right field.

Other key offensive performances included an 8-for-11 start at the plate (.727) for Miami’s Danny Reyes as the Hurricanes took two of three from Rutgers. Reyes delivered four doubles and is slugging at 1.364 clip in the early going.

Louisville’s Devin Mann hit. .556 with a homer and seven RBIs as the Cardinals won three games in the Charleston Crabhouse Challenge. Mann posted a .667 on-base percentage and an .889 slugging percentage for the weekend.

North Carolina’s Michael Busch and Pitt’s David Yanni also closed opening weekend with seven RBIs apiece … Early leaders on the basepaths include Notre Dame’s Cole Daily with four stolen bases, and Wake Forest’s Jake Mueller with three.

Clemson closer Ryley Gilliam played a big part in two close wins against William & Mary … Gilliam pitched a hitless and scoreless 10th inning with three strikeouts to earn the win on Friday, then pitched a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts to record the save. For the weekend, he allowed just one hit, no runs and no walks with five strikeouts in his two innings of work.

Standout starting efforts included Boston College senior Brian Rapp, who worked six hitless, shutout innings in a 3-1 win at Santa Clara. Rapp walked just one batter and struck out a career-high 10 … Virginia’s Evan Sperling pitched six scoreless, one-hit innings in a 3-0 win over C-USA champion Rice. Sperling matched his career high with nine strikeouts … NC State Saturday starter Johnny Piedmonte allowed just two hits while striking out seven in a 3-1 win over Seton Hall. Piedmonte walked only batter while going seven strong innings.
