Recommendations for things to do in Miami.

Jul 22, 2019, 12:08 PM

My wife and I have a free trip to Miami Beach for one week. She won this package (airfare and hotel) though her work. We are flying down early August. Anyone have recommendations of things to do?
Things on our list are:
1. Architectural tour of Art Deco district
2. See little Havana.

TIA

Based on my last trip to Miami:
Do's:
1. Miami Beach/ art deco
2. Calle Ocho for lunch (can't remember the place but excellent cuban sandwiches/ empanadas/ plaintains)
3. Vizcaya house/ gardens
Don'ts:
1. Jan 2012 Orange Bowl fiasco

My cousin was married at Vizcaya back in March....

I would recommend the following:
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, the home of James Deering of Deering McCormick-International Harvester fortune. His Italian villa and gardens are exquisite. South Miami, right on Biscayne Bay.
Fairchild Tropical Gardens, one of the best palm collections in the world. Magnificent gardens if you or your wife like gardening. Even if you don't, you would probably enjoy it. Very close to Vizcaya.
Parrot Jungle is a must. Great gardens and bird collection with free flying parrots and a great parrot show. Located in Coral Garbles. You don't know when you go from Miami to Coral Gables.
I don't consider any of the above as "tourist traps" as so many things around Miami are.

Get out on the water drift fishing or Jungle Queen cruise

We love being on the water and always try to go drift fishing or go on the Jungle Queen in Fort Lauderdale when we are there.

Burgers at Le Tub in Hollywood Beach is really cool. Its on A1A and is a classic. Only takes cash, but there is an ATM. Split the burger because it is huge. Its on the Intercoastal. Pretty quirky and famous spot. Not cheezy at all like much of South Florida. I live in South Florida. The Biltmore in Coral Gables is a beautiful old classic nice place for breakfast, lunch, maybe dinner. I have never had dinner there, but it is a really cool place. Kind of fancy, but a beautiful building with nice grounds to check out.

Little Havana - eat at either Versailles or La Carreta (both at SW 36th Ave and SW 8th St). Go to Ball and Chain for drinks/salsa dancing (SW 14th Ave and SW 8th St).

Miami Beach is kind of touristy, and honestly, expensive and cr@appy. Uber to Wynwood District. Great art scene (walls are all murals by graffiti artists) good restaurants, local breweries and shopping. My favorites Butcher Shop, Mr.O1 pizza, Coyo Tacos. Be sure to visit Wynwood Walls.

August and September are Miami Spice month, so many restaruants (including the top rated ones) run lunch and dinner specials specific to this promotion. Lunches are around $25 and dinners are around $40 (all are multiple course offerings).

Other areas to visit:

Brickell
Vizcaya Gardens
Bill Baggs Cape Florida state park @ Key Biscayne

Joe's Stone Crab is great, but August is not a good time to go there. Stone crabs are out of season until October.

There are a lot of great restaurants to try, so it depends on what you like.

Miami Spice, as previously mentioned, is a way to try some high-end places at a reasonable price. $23 for lunch or $39 for dinner for a 3-course meal (not including tax & tip). Check out www.miamitemptations.com for participating restaurants and links to menus.

Groupon will also have deals on food and other fun things to do. It's slow season, so you can find a lot of deals.

Other ideas:
Take an Everglades trip - very cool and unique to this part of the world. You can get a shuttle bus trip for about $45 each.

If you have a rental car booked for the whole week (and only plan to be around South Beach) cancel it. There are a million Uber/lyft cars, rental bikes, golf cart rides, etc. Parking a rental car is a pain and costs more than the rental car fee. You can rent a car for a day from a lot of places on the beach.

The Seaquarium is kind of fun. That's on the way to Key Biscayne.

The Keys can also be a great day trip. Key West is 3.5 - 4 hours by car. Islamorada is about 90 minutes. There's some great snorkeling and fishing to be had.

Check out www.miaminewtimes.com to find live music and things to do.

Enjoy your trip!
