What is your solution?

Apr 8, 2019, 2:28 PM

What would your solutions be to stop future Zion's from happening?

would it be one of these two options? Do you have another idea or thought?

#1 - Hand out tougher sanctions against these schools for the blatant cheating. When was the last time the Death Penalty was used? Was it SMU? It worked with them. It took them 20 years to recover from the Death Penalty and they still have not completely recovered. If tougher sanctions, to include the Death Penalty were actually dished out to these schools in todays World of Collegiate Athletics, these schools may think twice before paying a kid or his family. Just ask SMU officials if they it was worth 20 years of nothing for a few years of good success.

#2 - Start paying kids some type of salary to play Collegiate sports. Although, paying players still wont solve the issue with their parents being paid, nor, would it seem plausible that this could occur across all sports in Collegiate Athletics. So, which players would get paid? Just Football and Basketball? Or, would we pay the fishing teams, tennis players and lacrosse players too? How much should they get paid? Is it tiered? One salary? Stars get more? Where does it stop?

where you have to be in college for 3 years before being eligible for the draft.

The threat of players leaving whenever they please is harming college basketball.

Cut the achilles of the top 100 players and let the mad scramble for the leftovers begin! Then everyone would have to develop players! Just kidding don't cut all of their achilles half we could just take an eye or hand.

Of course, there are lots of requirements for being President that don't apply to playing pro sports (for example, where you were born) so I'm not sure how relevant a comparison it is.

Apparel companies. Force schools to buy all their equipment on the open market. Actually, that would never work either because the companies would be trying to outbid each other to get their names exposed.

I guess the next best thing would be to ban all logos, trademarks etc from equipment.

Tough problem that amateur sports has right now.

a free minor league for their respective sports. The universities go along with it because they make a lot of money off the deal, too. Stop forcing kids to play for free in college (or waste 1-3 years of their lives waiting) before they can go pro, and most of this shady stuff will go away.

Do you think most High School football players are ready to go to the NFL when they graduate? I could see a lot of injuries and possibly deaths occurring if this is allowed. Basketball is one thing but football would be a death sentence for a lot of kids who are Superstars playing in High School but would be destroyed in the NFL.

Re: What is your solution?

Apr 8, 2019, 2:43 PM

SMU is the only school to ever receive the death penalty. Younger people don’t remember what a power SMU was. SMU absolutely has never recovered. There have been multiple articles written, doubting that the NCAA will ever use the death penalty again. Mostly those articles center around the idea that the NCAA can’t be in the business of destroying marquee programs.

What’s the answer? Send those that pay bribes to jail. Send those that accept bribes to jail.

As far as Death Penalty goes I can agree with what you are saying. If anyone recent University deserved the Death Penalty it was Penn State. That to me was proof enough that the NCAA will never administer it again. I know Penn State wasn't pay for play but it was much worse than that.

Re: What is your solution?

Apr 8, 2019, 2:49 PM

Coaches salary must come from the school and no outside sources. No one can serve two masters. Seems tough but if we want to clean up this mess, particularly in basketball, we will need to resort to tough measures. Let the apparel and other companies donate to the academic side if they want to be generous with their money.

The AAU teams and handlers need some form of regulation to prevent some of the problems attributed to them.

Re: What is your solution?

Apr 8, 2019, 2:51 PM

Let them go pro right away. If they go to college they need to stay 3 years. If a players family is paid off that player isnt eligible and all wins are forfeited. The school also loses a couple of scholarships.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: What is your solution?

Apr 8, 2019, 2:54 PM

Neither solution would work.
For one the NCAA has no clout anymore and I doubt they even know how to spell the word sanctions.
Secondly, college sports today probably takes in 20 times more money than they did 20 years ago, and even if they could, do you think the NCAA would impose the Death Penalty on a Duke, a UNC or a Notre Dame with those type of revenues coming into a school?
Besides, hasn't Duke already said they did nothing wrong? The only way to prove that would probably be in a court of law, and we know how that works, lose the case, appeal, win the case you lose more clout.
And you can't pay the kids either. For one, how would you decide on how much? And who?
How much do you pay a walk on if he turns out to be a Hunter Renfro vs a recruited player like Justyn Ross?
Some schools have more money to pay a player, but if Duke were not private, or didn't have the money, do you think they would have landed Zion.
And what if it had been Clemson that landed him. Do you pay Trevor more than Zion just because Trevor won a National Championship playing in 15 games while Zion lost in the Elite 8 while playing closer to 40?
I really don't have a solution.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe just let the invisible hand sort it out?

Apr 8, 2019, 3:01 PM

Schools don't need to be involved in the business of paying players, but why is it their business (or the NCAA's) if someone else wants to?

Re: What is your solution?

Apr 8, 2019, 2:57 PM

Simple, let them go straight to Pros. Other sports do it. Tennis, swimming, baseball. If Pros don’t want to pay them, they won’t. Easy.

Re: What is your solution?

Apr 8, 2019, 4:24 PM

I am not sure that people would think that the one and done was a problem if the bulk were not going to a select few schools. Require the scholarship to be used for 3 years regardless of how long the player stays. The elite players will then be spread out over more institutions which would lessen the benefits of any one school being corrupt.

Re: What is your solution?

Apr 8, 2019, 4:51 PM

Utilize the same model as Baseball and Football in every sport. If a kid is 18 and wants to go pro then he or she should be able. They may succeed or they may fail...so is life. If you choose to enter college then you have to wait until your 3rd year or age appropriate (see Daniel Moskos) to turn pro.

As far as paying players I think that is Pandora’s box that doesn’t need to be opened. I’m all for a standardized stipend for parents to use on travel.

Things that never get talked about when paying players is discussed: the living stipend they already receive should they choose to live off campus, the free clothes and shoes, the nutrition quality and availability, & last but not least, the difference in a lifetime salary of a college graduate vs a high school degree.
