question for the board Guru's: who has the better brand

Feb 3, 2017, 8:33 AM

- without regard to current circumstances of W's and L's -

whose Brand is better

Clemson's or Oregon's ?

the Orange Paw or the swooshed-up Fluorescent Green Duck ?

We are national champions. So I would say us.
GO TIGERS!

Clemson has been relevant since the late 70's

Feb 3, 2017, 8:37 AM

Has Oregon? That's the way I look at it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Great question.... and a difficult one...

Feb 3, 2017, 8:42 AM

Clemson's is probably better in football right now. Oregon's is always hard to judge because it is so woven together with Nike and their brand that it is confusing.

Late 70's....you need to do some homework.

wow

From a 60 year old guy from the South - Clemson.

Feb 3, 2017, 8:44 AM

But from a 18 year old recruit - probably pretty close. Including recent National Championship in Football, then Clemson by a smidgen.

As of today I would say Clemson but hard to tell being on opposite sides of the country. 4 years ago it was Oregon for sure.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Tropical nailed it. When Oregon started to come into

Feb 3, 2017, 8:58 AM

prominence, it was an embarrassment for the PAC.

A DUCK!! as conference champ ... instead of USC or Washington or UCLA ... or anyone!

Perception changed when they kept putting out amazing product. They couldn't beat the SEC, but were otherwise amazing to watch.

They changed their perception, but it took a long time and I think is fading rather quickly.

The Paw has been around a long time ... stood for 'old' success and glory. A great 'old' southern team.

I'd equate them except Clemson now is also the new.

The Paw wins.

“Clemson wasn’t that much better with Trevor Lawrence, if at all.”

two things:

Feb 3, 2017, 9:06 AM

1) I tried to take the recent Natty out of it, but that's hard to do for people,
especially here on the Board.

but how quickly we forget Oregon toasting FSU in the 1st CFP semis....

2) It strikes me that if you are right, what does this say about our society?

We're such a "throw money at the problem" type of country now, and while
Clemson has spent a lot of money lately there's no way we'd win an money
war with Nike.

Yet Dabo's culture - which you specifically mentioned and alluded to - has seemingly
outperformed Phil Knight's money machine, at least for the time being.

Dabo has made the point several times - doing things in a way that will sustain....

So I keep asking myself the question: Does this have application to our society and to our country?

You have to consider geography here

Feb 3, 2017, 9:01 AM

while Oregon's brand is certainly prominent, it just isn't seen by as many people as often. Late west coast games and all

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson

Feb 3, 2017, 9:03 AM

You know the Tiger paw helmet, the orange, white, and once a year purple. With Oregon you just wonder which color Highliter your uniform will look lie this week!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson. Oregon is still trendy in my book.

Feb 3, 2017, 9:14 AM

Clemson is old and established.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Old & established like "old & established." Perhaps....

Feb 3, 2017, 10:38 AM

Young & upcoming like "new & trendy."

Bah humbug- we can reserve the right to be grumpy about all the new fangle crap!

How many HSs and colleges have adopted a "Paw" since

Feb 3, 2017, 10:35 AM

Clemson created the logo in 1970??

Hundreds at least.

How many HSs and colleges use a "Duck" as their mascot?

Our recognition occurred organically while Oregon's was purchased by Nike.

Re: How many HSs and colleges have adopted a "Paw" since

Trying to remember the first time I encountered the PAW. I replicated it on a computer printout using punch cards sometime during '68 - '70. It turned out pretty well. I might still have that thing somewhere in the attic. Can't remember if I used Fortran or COBOL though. CLEMSON used an IBM-360 mainframe in those days.

LOL - my Valentine FAILED that year. I still remember the girl at the Computer Center telling me that was so sweet, but it failed halfway through. I never tried it again due to the embarrassment. That was probably the closest that I ever came to being romantic. :)

I agree with Tropical....

Feb 3, 2017, 10:49 AM

As much as I love dear old Clemson, we have to pull back and look at it objectively, or rather, through the eyes of an 18 yr old. Nike is huge with these kids and part of their draw is the outlandish uniforms every week and the amazing facilities Phil Knight has created for the program. When I was a teenager everyone laughed at the "Ducks" and Hawaii Rainbows. Both have moved away from that a bit. The "O" is featured prominently and I have to admit the carbon fiber helmet look from a few years back was pretty awesome. I also like how they have the "O" on the 35 yd line hash marks for kickoffs. I've been saying for a while that placing little Paws on our 35 would look amazing! (Maybe we can make a change.org petition! ??)
On another level, maybe it's because both states really have no other football school to compete with ??. We have a #### and they have a Beaver.

Most people know WHO we are

Feb 3, 2017, 10:59 AM

but a lot don't know WHERE we are. I was the 4th in a 4some at Myrtle Beach with guys I didn't know, and they asked where I was from. I said, "Seneca, near Clemson." They said, "Where's that?" I said, "In the northwest corner of the state." One guy asked, "Is that near Boone?"

True story.

Hopefully all of that will change.
