honest question: is trump the smartest president in modern..

Nov 1, 2018, 9:18 AM

history?

I mean, he absolutely has polarized the left. Go to CNN or MSNBC there is not a single spot where you cant find his name or his picture.

Dont get me wrong, I dont agree with the way he handles and says certain things, but it is absolutely incredible to watch him outfox the media and the left (mutually exclusive) each and every day.

go ahead... debate....

Yes, that trait is exclusive to the left.

Nov 1, 2018, 9:22 AM

The right totally LOVES THE SHIT out of things they can't control, because reasons.

Freedom requires restraints on control

Nov 1, 2018, 9:29 AM

Whole purpose of the Constitution was to disperse control, with three branches, 13 states (now 50), and a republican structure (not the party, but the mechanism of governance).

But again, our problem is systemic, not political.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-tiggity-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And the Republicans want to control all of those

Nov 1, 2018, 2:21 PM

and now are actively wanting to change the constitution to favor them so if you say Freedom requires restraints on control, does the current political reality fit that requirement? Are we more free or less?

Trump isn't stupid like the Dems would have people believe.

Nov 1, 2018, 9:28 AM

He isn't unstable either. He is embodying the exact traits his base wants and he knows this. A base that has been told for years that they are under attack and that the left are trying to take from them and thinks they are stupid. So he gives voice to those who have believed this. The truth doesn't matter because his base sees it as trolling the enemy.

The difference for those that don't like Trump is the belief that the presidency should behave with respect and maturity.

Nov 1, 2018, 10:04 AM

they were no less obsessed. It kind of goes with the territory of being the leader of the opposition territory.

I watched for 15 minutes in the mid afternoon in an ace hardware once and they called Obama a socialist 15 separate times at least. And that was a news segment.

Nigel Tufnel, he's turned it up to 11.

It'd be nice to go back to the W years kinda acrimony. Sure there were media people that mocked him for being dumb, but we knew these people were idiots and dismissed them. Then Obama haters got a little worse, rhetoric ratcheted up a bit...throw is some racist shid and so on. Obama's arrogance didn't help things, but at the heart of it, we knew he and W were good people doing their level best at a dang hard job.

Now the rhetoric is at bird-flipping, mooning, drinkin'and shootin' levels with the fuggin politicians celebrating it.

"It'd be nice to go back to the W years kinda acrimony. Sure there were media people that mocked him for being dumb, but we knew these people were idiots and dismissed them."

Bull FS......what color is the sky in your world? Bush was called a murderer, treasonous, accused of either starting a war for oil, revenge, or enriching Haliburton. He was accused of being a racist and ignoring Katrina victims, and just about every other major character flaw you can imagine. The constant chants of him being dumb were brief respites from the more serious accusations. Every move the guy made was nitpicked, and it was by most on the left, not just "media people".

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's my point, anybody media or otherwise, that

Nov 1, 2018, 11:03 AM

yelped about murder, treason, etc were either being stupid or exaggeratingly political. We knew better how to drown out the idiots. I lived through Katrina, saw the destruction first hand. There's nothing historically comparable that could've possibly prepared any administration, pub or dem, for the appropriate response to satisfy everyone. We knew critics like these were idiots and said so.

Now this kinda shiddy heckling and political mooning is celebrated.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's all cyclical. Our divisions within the country are

Nov 1, 2018, 11:10 AM

still nowhere near historical highs, but they're bad, and they've been bad before. I'm just looking at the recent era, but I think it started with Ken Starr.

Before that, libs didn't like Reagan and Bush I, but we all got along, and Pubs didn't totally like Bill but up until the end we all still got along.

The Lewinsky incident started the whole polarization (I think the investigation was an abuse of Special Prosecutor power, so shame on the pubs, and I think the "vast right wing conspiracy" narrative was typical Clinton schlock, so shame on the dems).

Then things really got turned to 11 with the way the 2000 election went down...it was a messy election, and I don't think the way Al Gore handled the defeat helped. Combine the two I just mentioned, and the left was out to make life he## on Bush and the right, no matter what happened, and they did it for 8 years.

Childish, right? So much so that the right doubled down on it and did the same thing to Obama and the left for his 8 years.

Now the tables have turned again, except this time there's a guy with no real interest in pacifying the detractors.

I'm just sort of curious what the event will be that will break the cycle, or if there will (or can) be such an event.

Nov 1, 2018, 11:22 AM

but I don't really remember things getting ugly until the Starr investigation.

I remember Newt more for things like the "Contract with America" (lol) than for being a rabble rouser. It was dumb and they didn't live up to it, but it was still "here's what our side proposes to do for you" rather than the "here's why the other side is bad" that is pretty much the norm now.

Reread the "Contract with America". The Republican controlled house was responsible for Clintons good economy.
Clinton forced 300,000 military personnel onto the street so he could say he shrunk Federal spending

Nov 1, 2018, 11:22 AM [ in reply to Polarity requires contrasting or opposite opinions, he has ]

Suprise, huh.

The nation was highly polarized when Trump announced his run. He gave the middle class one thing they wanted, work. I'm not much for blaming past administrations but Obama's 'Bitterly clutching their guns and Bibles,' comment alienated a lot of voters. It wasn't the attack on guns or Bibles but showed his disrespect for a couple Constitutional rights and those who hold those rights dear.

I don't want to get in the weeds with this but if you're about gun control and don't Believe the Bible is the Word then you're not equipped to comprehend how venomous his statement was to those who do.

Trump just came on stage and contradicted Obama. It was that simple and the other thing his supporters wanted. I'm not sure if Trump believes his policies are right but I know he hit the nail on the head when he argued that most everything Obama did was wrong. Obama campaigning for Dems is one of the smartest thing Trump didn't do.

Good ol' 88. I would imagine that there is more that

Nov 1, 2018, 11:50 AM

we agree on that probably either one of us thinks...that would be the surprise.

I'm not discounting Obama's penchant for arrogance and he can out-smug Hillary on the smuggiest day of her life. But he's still a good person. The man arranged his travel schedule so he could be home at dinner with his girls as much as possible. Obama has his priorities in order.

Did the guns and Bible comment infuriate people so much that they were driven to give up their Christian morals to retort? Why in the world would Mike Pence, a man who proclaims religious virtue as his highest calling, cast his lot with a man that represents his personal antithesis? And then go on to do harm. Same with Jeff Sessions, whom I know personally. Most of our church members were greatly surprised to see him throw in with a man like Trump during the campaign. Now that were "winning" the same church members seem to be OK with every and all things Trump. Even immigrant family separations, when the parent/child relationship is the worldly representation of our individual relationship with God. I know if there were no hypocrites we wouldn't need churches, but c'mon people..St. Paul is gonna start writing letters again.

Trump's only priority is to himself, he is incapable of unselfish action or intention. Why would self-identified Christians support that?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that’s not really a fair accusation.

Nov 1, 2018, 12:25 PM

It’s been quite a while since Christians had a leader here on Earth who was without sin.

Each and every leader since the beginning of time has done things that went against the teachings of Christianity, and yet I don’t recall their supporters being automatically tossed out of the club.

That’s a cheap shot.

without armor at all buying billboards and TV ads bragging about his transgressions as "winning" and wagging his peanus at passersby. This is not a person with a few faults, but a person with few, if any, redeeming qualities.

He's not the kind of person that you'd have to dinner unless you had to. If you had a daughter, would you like her to date/marry someone like this? Yet, outwardly Christian people embrace and celebrate the guy. Why?

I'd love to have a beer with Obama. It would be awesome if W and Laura came over to dinner. I'd even break bread with Bill and Hillary out of sheer fascination...with Bill in the farthest seat at the table from Mrs. Old Slac of course. HW Bush, Reagan, Carter, Ford, Nixon...all fascinating people in their personal qualities, not just their political.

But Trump is the biggest, loudest, boastful, self-centered a$$hole and self-proclaimed religious folks love him. Why?

They support what/who they think supports them, period.

They also overlook a lot of flaws if they think they're getting that support.

If you disagree with where they place their support, I'd probably question their intelligence, motivations, political savvy, or basic understanding of how the world works, but I'm not sure it's grounds to question their piety.

All the leaders you'd have a beer with have come up just as short in the eyes of God as Trump has, but like you, I'd still have a beer with all of them, and I hope I'm no less of a Christian for it.

Solid points. I know plenty of folks that consider

Nov 1, 2018, 1:30 PM

themselves very religious that bit their lip and voted for Trump because of party affiliation or just that there was no fuggin' way they'd vote for Hillary. I understand that and was the latter. I don't get the overtly religious folks that celebrate him post-election, the cult of personality types. Again, if there were no hypocrisy we wouldn't need churches.

Trump is a different animal. I guess correct nomenclature for his predecessors would be a steady line of elephants and donkeys, while he is more of a giant, angry, insecure porcupine with a massive inferiority complex, slinging insults and invective in every direction. Can you imagine Reagan or Dubya opining to the world that a sitting congresswoman is LOW IQ! I can't.

We can have a good economy, sound immigration policy, and good conservative tax/spending decisions without the theater of dix and a$$holes.

I'm just trying to maintain the perspective that people in general are basically good, and operate from there.

In my simplistic way of thinking, that mindset would do a lot of us a lot of good as we relate to others....I think we've generally lost that mindset as a country. Now it's "people who think LIKE ME are basically good".

Trump is a malignant narcissist. I know one just like him and he hurts my step-children constantly all while screaming to the world how much he loves them.

Trump is NOT a basically good person. He's on his third wife. He's cheated on them all. He brags about sexually assaulting women. He relishes hurting people. He holds permanent grudges. He's the first president in my lifetime that I have nothing but animosity towards. He's literally never done one thing in office that appeared to me to be motivated by concern for other people.

I'm not saying his self-interest hasn't lined up with good results for other people sometimes, just that I have never seen even a shred of evidence that he is a decent human being. And he's the only public figure I've ever been able to say that about.

I find it a little confusing that you don't see the conflict between me and those who think I'm bitter about clinging to my Bible. Obama wouldn't have said that about Muslims, Hindi or the Jewish and neither would you. We all know what he said and who he said it to. This isn't an issue as trivial as a job. Some of us recognize the three greatest gifts of God. Salvation, His divine presence and His Word, the Bible. I wouldn't be me without all three.

Are you sure he was talking about you?

Nov 1, 2018, 5:00 PM [ in reply to I can't answer for Pence. ]

From his 08 campaign speech in NorCal

"You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

I don't think you're bitter, I think you're listening to some talking head extrapolate a theme and create something offensive from a campaign speech. Do your own thinking 88; it sure looks like Obama understands the reason for their bitterness is the repeated failure of these communities to regenerate under past administrations.

When times are hard, cling to what you know. Don't many of us draw closer to God and his word for comfort? I do.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How bitter are you and how many guns do you own?

Nov 2, 2018, 9:35 AM

You have very nice words but they are do not address Obama's statement. The language was to differentiate and separate the audience from those who oppose Obama's politics. It was slanderous to Christians to call us bitter and paint us as desperate turning to guns and Bibles for comfort. It was a demeaning insult.

Bitterness is an emotion. When someone calls you bitter they are saying your emotions control your judgement. I fail to see how a those who holds dear their Bibles can rightly be accused of antipathy since that very Bible instructs us to love even our enemies. Obama has no idea the value of the Bible or what motivates us to cling to it with or without adversity in our lives.

I have never seen a Christian who turned to his gun from desperation because he lost his job. I have no idea how he could say that.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I am a Christian and I did not find it slanderous at all

Nov 2, 2018, 9:39 AM

Nov 2, 2018, 11:54 AM [ in reply to How bitter are you and how many guns do you own? ]

is just nothing at all demeaning or insulting about his words. He's not calling you bitter, unless your one of the disaffected residents of small town PA that has lost faith in their government. And if you are, he is stating that he understands why you are bitter.

I didn't vote for him, but Obama is not my enemy. He's not yours either. A man of your faith would certainly have more in common with him than the current resident of the WH.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

One response applicable to you and Ford.

Nov 5, 2018, 2:52 PM

Check the voting from those disenfranchised PA voters who took issue with Obama's words.

As for Mr Ford.

I worked in construction for 45 years just like those people. I've been through two liberal big government expansion dems, Carter and Obama. Both stunk up the economy with regulations.

What line of work do either of you do that makes your opinion better than mine on how those blue collar folks perceived O's words? Say.

As far as my faith being similar to Obama's, had I ever sat in a church with Rev Wright and hear him ask God to dammn America you might be right about me and O having a similar perception of God.

Don't assume I'm bitter about anything. Don't assume I'm clinging to anything but God, his Holy presence and His Word.

Comparing one heathen to another isn't practical. I like Trump because we have similar political views. I don't like Obama because he and I don't. Nothing more and certainly nothing less.

Many of the people offended by that remark were all for an EO to take out the 14th, have no problems with tort reform despite its impingement on the 7th, have no problem at all with how often the police violate the 4th amendment in the black community, and sure as hell don't have any problem with Trump occasionally threatening to take away press credentials.

He's outfoxing people, but it's not the media per se....

Nov 1, 2018, 10:39 AM

it's mostly his ardent supporters IMO.

There is a segment of his supporters that support him no matter what he says or what he does.

When he makes statements like "unknown middle easterners are mixed into the caravan" with no evidence to back it up (which he's now admitted...I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt originally) he's doing that to manipulate his based on supporters...not the media.

His comments now about using an EO to reverse birthright citizenship right before the mid-terms...that's not to outplay the media...that's for his base. Many of these folks in this base would fight each other over who is the most conservative...yet fully support the POTUS trying to change existing law with an EO. The very thing these same folks would have jumped up and down (and rightly so) about Obama doing with the ACA.

His entire point of beingis convincing people that he is smarter, richer, and more powerful than he really is. When things go well, he takes credit, when they go poorly, he points the finger at someone else. it is all bluster.

The "education" guy above acts like this is a new thing Trump invented, and we had balanced budgets and no debt prior to Trump getting in office.

We've been living on that credit card for awhile.

Nov 2, 2018, 7:51 AM

America by distributing wealth is a disgrace to America. Thinking that the government has a right to levy a new tax at whim is a disgrace. Obama was a disgrace. Little he did to benefit America. The exception is waking the middle class to how radical we would become if we didn't speak up and put a stop to the dems in power.

Nov 2, 2018, 12:54 PM

He's easily the most corrupt President, but I've never believed that being good at corruption or crime makes you a genius.

And he's set to lose the House in a few days. The bigger story is that his party looks to be in line to get smacked hard in local and state races, which are extremely important.

So no, he's no genius.

Trump is very smart...

Nov 5, 2018, 2:21 PM

In certain areas. And one of those is making sure his name and persona is in the conversation constantly. He's done that for decades.

The problem is, some of y'all think that's a good thing. It's smart when you're a reality TV star or trying to sell real estate. But doing it at the cost of our nation and to "own the libs" is going to be disastrous in the long run.

But in many other areas of life, he's an idiot. Like vocabulary. And over-inflated ego.

Most people don't realize how many conservative federal judges he's seated or even consider him bypassing congressional courtesy and sending a conservative fed judge to DIFI's district.

I don't always like him being so outspoken but pawing the MSM by fighting back at their spin with his spin is fair as rain, that I like. It makes them angry and out of control.
