Awful idea. There hasn't been a good semifinal game yet and going to 8 will definitely hurt the best regular season in sports. Automatic bids and more teams = NFL. I don't want that.

Not in favor of any at large bids.
Most years, we'd end up with 3 or 4 sec teams in it.
Unless, the at large bids have to be various conferences.

They are. Just as the regular season is, they just happen to be even more important.

When CFP began in 2014, I was strongly in favor of 8 teams

Then, all the talk was about the SEC possibly getting two teams in, even at the expense of undefeated & defending champ FSU being left out. As you recall, they were winning ugly that year! Now, after seeing the CFP play out for three years, I am not so much in favor of expanding it.
A big reason to keep it at four is, who wants to see rematches, especially of a conference championship game! Three of the conferences would have two teams each, unless a spot is reserved for the best group of 5 team. Still, there are two conferences with two teams each, or worse yet, possibly three teams from a conference! Who wants to have to beat a team again, that you have just beaten three weeks before.
As long as the committee keeps taking the best four of the five conference representatives(notice I didn't say champs), I think we will have the most compelling playoff. And the debate over which teams get in keeps things interesting.
The biggest plus to an 8 team playoff is, it would take a lot of the subjectivity out of the committee's hands, and that would be a good thing.

The best 4 conference champions after the conference championships are played.
You saw your best in the conference argument go out the window last year with OSU getting pounded 31-0.
WIN THE CONFERENCE ON THE FIELD!
It's not a horse show.

Sounds like a good plan. I'm just wondering if it would work

if conference champs were required to be in top-8 rather than top-12.

I posted this in the related thread.
16 team playoff. Do away with conference championships and play first round, make Power 5 divisions equal, take 10 division champs plus next 6 highest CFP ranked teams. CFP seeds teams, can move lower ranked opponent 1 or 2 seeds to avoid same conf or rematches. If 16 is too many, go with 12 and top 4 get first round bye. I think I like this better, could allow non 5 good team and/or ND and not load up with one conference.

Yet the regular season is still fun and entertaining, and fans go see it.

WHY TOP 12?
Oct 23, 2017, 6:15 PM
|
|
They won their conference in a playoff on the field.
Several teams that were barely in the Top 25 have won their conference and won the basketball National Championship.
NCSU and Villanova to name two.
There are a lot more Division 1 basketball teams too.
