"Ole" Timers would appreciate RB comparison to past RB's

Dec 7, 2018, 10:02 PM

So we have Etienne, Feaster, Choice, Dixon.

Started thinking back to great teams in the past, and thought about the 1981 team. Knew we had great running backs. Checked and found the following RB's : Cliff Austin, Chuck McSwain, Kevin Mack, and Jeff McCall. Have the same feeling toward our current backs as I had in the distant past. We have players now just as good as we have ever had. Only they are faster. What a great feeling going into the play offs.

I have thought about your post for a couple of minutes. I have decided that I cannot compare our current backs to the ones that you listed because the game was played so different in 1981.

No list is even near complete without......

ETN, Feaster and McCall are as big as Mack was in college playing FB. Believe Kevin played here between 210-220. He bulked up in the NFL. McCall was only 225-230. Austin and McSwain under 200 lbs.

If we're going to make comparisons, ETN and Fesster are closer to Flagler and Flowers. ETN is the best back that's ever played here though. And I don't remember anyone who ran like Dixon does

Seemed we had more power backs than speedy backs

in the 70s, 80s, and 90s like Mack and McCall who were
fullbacks. But guys like Warren Ratchford, Lester Brown,
Cliff Austin, and Terry Allen had some speed too. I was
at the Duke game in '82 when Austin ran for 260 yds (single
game record till Priester broke it) and he had several long
runs. Wished he could have done that more, but we spread it
around a lot in most games.

That '81 season brought us another great group of backs in
Flowers, Flagler, and Driver, probably as good or better
than any group we've had. Flowers was kind of a power back
while Flagler was about as fast as any back we've had and
Driver, the ricochet rabbit per Jim Phillips, was hard to
tackle. The 80s were great years for backs since Ford's
teams were pretty much run first.

We had Flagler, Flowers, Driver and Steve Griffen at the same time. 3 of these played in the pros, Driver got more carries!

Jeff McCall.....but it was NOT a good idea to be standing in front of him when he had the ball.....he loosened molars on any number of linebackers.

I enjoyed this thread. The talent on recent Clemson football teams is unparalleled in Clemson football history--I've stated outright numerous times that this year's squad is the best I've ever seen in well over 60 years of watching Tiger football....but its fun remembering those old guys....they were a trip

Remember that great "Sugar Bowl Team" in 58/59? Harvey White, Bill Mathis, George ("Pogo") Usrey, Doug Cline, Gary Barnes, Sam Anderson, Lou Cordeleone, Chuy and King? Ah, great memories.
