Billy Napier getting criticized in the media

Apparently, he "encouraged" his scholarship players to contribute $50 each to the athletic department to show their appreciation for the opportunity they have been given.
I understand the sentiment, but how did he think this would not blow up on him? He makes $750k+ a year, and $50 per player times 85 scholarships is only $4,250...why wouldn't he donate $50 in each player's name to show HIS appreciation? I would think the players, who are not allowed to "earn" money, show their appreciation by showing up and putting in the work.

without naming names. The point was, $50 to a player making $0 is a lot less than $4,250 to a coach making $750k, and if they are paying their coach $750k, how much of an impact will $4,250 have on the athletic department budget, anyway? I agree that the players should appreciate the university, but I think they already demonstrate that by working hard on the field and in the classroom to keep that scholarship. The idea seems well meaning, but misguided.
