Would the ACC be seen as "down" if...

Nov 7, 2018, 12:35 PM

FSU was ranked #13
Miami was ranked #14
VT was ranked #17

Instead of NC St, Syracuse, and BC.

I think the narrative would actually be "the ACC is really strong this year."

Interesting... I agree with you... would be in contention for the toughest conference...

Yep, but since we

don't play Miami or VT, I'm glad that's the way it is.

Well, we would get the signature win in the ACC Championship against one of them right before the playoff selection.

But, my main point is just that the ACC has good teams, it's just the fact that FSU, VT, Miami haven't lived up to expectations so the outside world views it as down.

Also if Clemson played them later in the year the perception would be different. If Louisville and Duke were October games and Syracuse and NC State were November games then the perception of the ACC and Clemson's schedule would be much different.

Clemson had already beaten those teams earlier in the year when the debate was heating up for playoff rankings. If Clemson had those games left to go, they would be considered more quality wins. Currently they are being passed off as decent wins because Clemson was not as strong and played Syracuse close and NC State was untested and assumed to be a fraud because of the way Clemson beat them.

If each of them were playing Clemson in November with 1 loss (their record minus the Clemson game) we would get much more credit.

Good question. If FSU was good and Miami were good the perception of the conference overall would be good! Yet another example of the talking heads on SEC-PN and other outlets who "live in the past"! Michigan is still getting a pass for what they did when Bo Schembeckler was their coach! And Notre Dame credit for the Lou Holtz/Tony Rice era!

No such thing as objective journalism! They look at the traditional powers pretty much only! This is why the Big 10 gets so much love despite being a "one-trick-pony"! O 31 O st. is the only team to compete for a national title or win one in the last 20 years or better! Yet, they get a pass b/c of what Michigan and Penn St has done in the past. They get to bowl games and often get smoked by other conferences. What has the Pac 12 done lately?

Be good to get some reports on who is good "now"!

Save the nostalgic reporting for ESPN Classic!

Valid point, but the main issue is ACC vs OOC so far

Nov 7, 2018, 2:04 PM

BC loses to Purdue by 17
UVA loses to Indiana
GT loses USF
Miami loses to LSU

and the kicker is Pitt losing to Penn St. by 45 and UCF by 31 but leading the coastal division

If we performed better out of conference, then I don't think it would matter if teams like FSU, Miami, or VT were "down."

Re: Valid point, but the main issue is ACC vs OOC so far

Purdue beat Ohio State, who is still in the top 10, worse than BC.

The rest of those teams are in the bottom half of the conference. Teams in the bottom half of conferences always lose games out of conference if they schedule anybody decent. When one of those bottom teams is Miami who is supposed to be one of the carrying members then the assumption by the casual viewer is that the rest of the conference must be worse than them.

Although currently higher in the standings, BC is most likely the 4th best team in their division and also the 4th best team in the conference.

The only difference between this year and the last few when the ACC was considered to be having some of its strongest years, is that there is not a team separating from the coastal. There is hardly any difference in rankings for the ACC right now compared to the last few years except that all 4 ranked teams are in the same division.

traditional ACC powerhouses in the top 25. As they went down none of the ESPiN trolls considered that others might just be better.

^^ right on, the early OOC losses are really what

Tainted the perception of the ACC this. We are slowly moving back up the polls now.

And don't forget VT being embarrassed by ODU!!***
