Women's tennis announces schedule

Sep 16, 2019, 6:01 PM

Clemson, S.C. – The 2019-20 Clemson women’s tennis team announced its 2019-20 season schedule on Monday. Highlighted by matchups with 12 2019 NCAA Tournament teams, three final four teams and the national runner-up, the Tigers look to improve on their 2018-19 season in which they missed the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2001. The Tigers will also compete against 13 teams ranked in the top-50 in the final 2019 ITA poll, including nine in the top-25 and four in the top-10.

“The 2019-20 schedule will help prepare our players for post season play at the highest level,” commented Head Coach Nancy Harris who enters her 22nd season at the helm of the program. “It is a rigorous schedule, like always and one that will bring out the best in our players. We are really excited to get under way and look forward to playing close to home at Furman University this coming weekend. Some of the best programs in the country will be there with competition beginning Friday.”

Fall Schedule

The 2019 fall campaign kicked off over the weekend at the Puerto Rico Fall Classic hosted by the University of Georgia. Next weekend, the Tigers will travel to Greenville to compete in the Furman Invitational. In total, Clemson women’s tennis has the chance to compete in 14 tournaments in the fall, most notably, the ITA Masters, ITA Regionals and ITA Fall Championships where former Tigers Fernanda Navarro and Marie-Alexandre Leduc earned the National Doubles title a season ago.

Home Opener and Non-Conference

The Tigers open the spring schedule at home on January 17th when they play host to Presbyterian College and North Carolina A&T. In total, Clemson will host 16 home matches, seven of which will be against conference opponents.

Though most of the Tigers’ strength of schedule will come from conference play, Clemson will square off against two top-10 opponents in non-conference action. The slate includes 2019 National Runner-Up Georgia and No. 5 South Carolina, with both matchups being played on the road. During Spring Break, Clemson will travel to San Diego, California to take on another NCAA tournament squad from last season, No. 72 Long Beach State University.

Conference Play

Competing in perhaps the most competitive conference in country for women’s tennis, Clemson is set to open ACC action on the road against Virginia Tech. The Tigers will also face No. 4 Duke, No. 21 Virginia, No. 30 Syracuse, No. 35 Georgia Tech, and No. 43 Boston College on the road. In April, the Tigers will play almost exclusively on home court, as they host No. 3 UNC, No. 20 Miami, No. 47 Notre Dame and Louisville to conclude the regular season.
