Why was Shyatt so bad?

Mar 27, 2019, 2:53 PM

I was kinda young during the Shyatt years. I remember getting used to being bad in basketball but I was a bit too young to really think about why we weren't any good. For those of you who remember, what were the reasons for Shyatt's failures? Was it bad talent evaluation or player development? Style of play and Xs and Ox? A mixture of everything?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mar 27, 2019, 2:55 PM

Shyatt didn't have the same caliber of athlete that Purnell and Brownell have brought in ??

I was going to play a pickup game of basketball with some friends at Fike when I saw him practicing 3-pointers with either a teammate or perhaps a young assistant coach feeding him the ball back after every shot. I stopped to watch him shoot cuz I was like “Hey, I’ve seen that guy on tv! He’s on the basketball team!!!” After the second shot he took in my presence was a complete air ball, I continued walking to my game and wondered how on earth was this guy playing in the ACC.

Not sure I completely agree with that. We had a few good players while he was coach, though most were guards, not many good big men. Terrell McIntyre, Harold Jamison, Will Solomon, Ed Scott, Tony Stockman, Sharrod Ford. Three of those made NBA rosters. How many Brownell players have made NBA rosters?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes I do.

Mar 27, 2019, 8:42 PM

He had to have charisma to convince Bobby Robinson to hire him as our head coach, despite one underwhelming year as a head coach elsewhere.

Well, then that means that Tommy West must’ve had charisma too. And he definitely didnt. So I take it back.

Mar 27, 2019, 3:59 PM

You’re awakening my Clemson basketball PTSD bringing up the Shyatt years lol. Larry was nice and a great guy (where have we heard that before), but his teams were huge, plodding and awful. The front court of Olu Babalola, Chris Hobbs (RIP) and Ray Henderson was the biggest, low bball IQ bunch I’ve ever seen at Clemson. They were all like 6’6-6’8, 240-270 pounds and just mugged people.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Why was Shyatt so bad?

Mar 27, 2019, 8:18 PM

I loved ply balbalola but he was pretty bad. He should have been a linebacker!

I remember going nuts watching the game on their senior day. I believe we were playing VT? Or was VT even in the acc then?

Anyways the way I remember it, we were down 4 with like 20 seconds left. Balbalola hit a 3. Then shawan Robinson stole the ball, passed it to Sharrod ford and he dunked it at the buzzer for the win.

Memory was very foggy and I could be wrong about players/sequence. But that was one of the craziest ending I’ve seen from clemson

Haha wow, incredible. All 3 that were a part of those 2 plays were seniors.

I was also a really big shawan Robinson fan. Very underrated basketball player. He was one of the rare players that could actually hit a free throw.

Looking back, that was a pretty #### talented team! James Mays, cliff hammonds, KC Rivers, sharrod Ford, Shawan Robinson

It was pandemonium after the dunk. These days that excitement would be quelled somewhat because they would send everyone to the benches and review it.

Re: Why was Shyatt so bad?

This is a sentence that can be said by almost every Tiger basketball fan no matter how old.

I remember getting used to being bad in basketball but I was a bit too young to really think about why we weren't any good.

On a side note during the Sept of what would be heading into his final season my wife and I saw Coach Shyatt at the Orlando airport coming back from our honeymoon. I recognized him but didn't want to bother him. He saw my Clemson hat and said go Tigers. We started talking for a few minutes and then he went and sat down. When the airline person came to the gate to start the boarding process he got up and starting talking to her. After a few minutes she called me over. He had checked to see if any 1st place seats were available and paid (paid, used miles, did whatever he did) to have us moved up.

Re: Why was Shyatt so bad?

Mar 27, 2019, 4:02 PM

To answer the original question - Shyatt allowed Solomon to hog the ball and shoot virtually every shot we took as a team. Thus we usually lost - on average we scored about 10 to 15 points besides what Solomon scored which was 30 to 45 usually. End of any game that was close was easy defense for the other team.

One game Solomon got injured and could not play the next game. The go to guy was gone and so the other team did not know who to guard. Our other players evened out the scoring in that game and we beat the number one team in the country - UNC. With a lead and late in first half, Solomon tried to play and UNC quickly jumped back in it. Solomon aggravated his injury and went back out....Stockman hit a couple of threes and a big lay up and we ramped back up and won the game.

If Solomon plays in the second half - we lose. I was actually pulling for him to stay on the bench.

Not knocking Solomon - he was a good scorer, but Shyatt hid behind him and it hurt the team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i remember attending the game when we played top 15 Seton Hall at home

Mar 27, 2019, 7:53 PM

Early in the year. We were trailing by 1 with like 30 seconds left and Solomon stood by the half court line just holding the ball for like 25 seconds before making his move way too late and ended up not getting a shot off. It was way too obvious that Solomon wasn't even going to consider passing

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think he was a fantastic Xs and Os coach but

Mar 27, 2019, 4:55 PM

the biggest issue was he just couldn't recruit his way out of a wet paper bag. He inherited a few talented players from Barnes but, of the guys he recruited himself, very few were really ACC caliber. Ed Scott was good, Sherrod Ford eventually became a good player, and there might have been like one more guy, but our rosters under Shyatt were consistently barren of talent. We had quite a few international guys Like Akin Akingbala, Olu Babalola, Tomas "Nasty" Nagys, and Pasha Bains that were all pretty limited. Some were physical specimens but hardly even knew how to play basketball and others were fairly skilled but extremely limited athletically.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He was a mediocre coach who didn't recruit particularly well***
