Why not just pay players for their likeness?

May 16, 2019, 11:39 AM

A minority of schools actually make money in football. If someone wants to buy a Trevor Lawrence jersey pay him a percentage. 95 percent of players are just happy to be on scholarship. Seems pretty easy.

How bout we go back to old school rules before espn

May 16, 2019, 11:45 AM

We remove the reduced academic requirements allotted to athletes.

You go through the acceptance process like any other high school student.

You have open tryouts in spring for any student who wants to play football.

Pick your best 85 ...and go play the students from other schools.

Coaches also have to teach classes and can not be paid more than any other professor.

I know it seems socialist and I definitely am NOT, but it is a Team sport not an individual sport and it would only be fair when all are on the same scholarship that it would need to be spread across the team, Then I would agree. After College when they start their professions then it is everyone get what you deserve!

Because guys like Kirby Smart will say to recruits:

(in a dark, sketchy bar)
*whispers* "Come be a leg-humper; we got a deal lined up with EA and Nike for your likeness that'll bring you in X amount of $$$"

What scares me the most is that instead of a sketchy bar, this happens in his office, where everyone knows about it and can do nothing. It's not that I don't think Clemson could compete in that scenario; it's that only 16-20 teams could. The rest might as well not play the sport anymore.

It would be IMPOSSIBLE to regulate paying players in a fair manner across all of D1, whether you want to or not.

Clemson consistently has one of the best PR

May 16, 2019, 11:57 AM

teams in the country. IF any school is going to be able to pump out a lot of $$$ for players likeness it will be Clemson. Only thing that hurts Clemson is the smaller fan base as compared to ND, OSU, UM, UT, etc. They'd have to make the payment rules in a way that recruits don't see a huge benefit of picking a big school over a smaller school solely due to money generated for their likeness.

Making the cheating public would be so much better for the sport.

Forget the jerseys and just bring back NCAA FB video game. Haven't touched a controller since they quit making them. That may also have something to do with getting older....

Lawrence's scholarship is worth a lot of money. Few people in any discussion about paying players seem to value the scholarship. Clemson is giving him the opportunity to hone his skills over the next two years he can earn millions. No one ever seems to talk about that either. If players don't see value in those things they're not going to see value in picking up a couple of bucks because someone bought a jersey with his number on it.

The only fair argument

May 16, 2019, 12:35 PM

they have is the outrageous amounts of money coaches are making.

The rest of the money goes right to the student athletes.

Schools could have the comp sci dept develop a new football game each year and market it. Then, boosters could buy the game so the entire roster gets a percentage. There... that fixes everything...wait...

I agree with homeslice. Saban, " Our left OT sold 500 bobble heads, 500 jerseys & 500 posters last year."

How can you keep deep pocket boosters from buying up oodles of likenesses and then giving as gifts to everyone they know, including the bagger at Kroger. At least now, if you give away cash it 'can' come back and bite you. Under new rules, it's fair game. The rich will get richer.

If a researcher makes a breakthrough that leads to a new patent, the patent belongs to the employer. The players would not have market reach or appeal without the support of the university. The revenue should belong to the University.

When calculating what a student athlete gets for his playing time, don't forget the value added to their game with million dollar coaching, state the art training and nutrition.
