and Clemson has won the Natty two of the past three seasons and this kid's mom thinks he should play for them instead of Clemson? I remember when Ole Miss and their coach at the time liked to recruit by "influencing" a player's mom several years ago. Where is that coach now?

ability to recruit kids? It just seems so obviously more complicated than that to me.
Path to the NFL. Relationship with coaches. Facilities. Education/major. Relationship with players. Etc.
I think getting beat 28-0 in a bowl game is probably irrelevant compared to that other stuff.

ters but it helps a LOT and that is obvious with the recruiting success we now enjoy. Travis Etienne said he told his mother he wanted to attend Clemson if they would just offer after watching us play Bama and winning the first National Championship under Dabo

A high caliber player wants to play for championships, not a dumpster fire, more often than not. Unless he buys into the old recruiting spiel about 'You're the difference maker in our program. You're the guy who can put us over the top. You don't want to go THERE and sit the bench for 2 or 3 years'. Which, in Clemson's case is nonsense because Dabo plays everybody and it's significant snaps. It's part of the reason we destroyed Alabama, because the starters weren't beat down and tired from a long season.
I think his main point was about the involvement of the mom, if there's any validity to that. I get it because of the Nkemdiche episode, as well as the Cam Newton thing at Auburn. Not saying that's what's going on, because I have no idea and haven't heard any of that, but I get why he asked the question.

We had some excellent recruits sign with us after some bad seasons over the years. It happens. A lot of folks then raised these same sort of conspiratorial objections about us at the time.
There are tons of reasons recruits sign with schools (and a ton of reasons why recruits' parents, friends, coaches, etc want them to go to one place or another).
Now then, the Ole Miss issue raised a lot of eyebrows due to the number of top tier players making their way to Freeze's program, but some times its just a case of a what a school has to offer (legitimately) and a good job recruiting.
